2015 Lenten Activities and Resources

Lent is the 40 day period in the Church year set aside for the spiritual preparation for Easter.  It is a time of renewal where we recall our baptism and new members prepare for their baptism.  It is also a time of penance where we seek forgiveness and reconcile ourselves to God, the Church and members of our community.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 18th) and lasts until the Mass of the Lord's Supper (Holy Thursday April 2nd). Lent prepares us to celebrate more fully the death and resurrection of Jesus.  This Lent our school community will again partner with Catholic Relief Services' (CRS) Rice Bowl program.

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services' Lenten faith-in-action program for parishes, schools and

families. The program invites Catholics to live in solidarity with our poorest and most vulnerable

brothers and sisters through the three Lenten pillars of praying, fasting, and almsgiving. Participants journey throughout the forty days of Lent with the daily reflections included in the Lenten Calendar, offering small, suggested sacrificial gifts to fill their Rice Bowls as they read and watch Stories of Hope from individuals and communities whose lives have been changed by CRS Rice Bowl funds.

Listed below are important dates/activities to help students live out the pillars of Lent. As always we invite parents to join us for our liturgical celebrations!

  • 3/20 Second Grade Reconciliation Retreat for parents and students 7:30-12:25 on campus
  • 3/25 First Reconciliation for 2nd Grade 6:30pm in the church
  • 3/27 Living Stations of the Cross presented by the 4th grade 9AM in the church
  • 3/31 8th Grade Retreat at the CASA (parents attend Mass at 3:30)
  • 4/1 Adoration in the church 1:45pm in church for grades 3-8
  • 4/2 Students bring Lenten rice bowls to pledge and prayer where they will place them at the foot of the cross

Dear St. Francis Xavier Families,

Do you believe that God has a plan for you? In a recent meeting with the 8th grade class about their future and high school admittance, I asked them to be honest about the answer to that question deep in their heart. Their true answer would determine everything about the days ahead.

Life so often surprises us because we continue to make plans and have expectations, sometimes fooling ourselves altogether that we're in charge. I'm not sure how you respond when the unexpected happens, but I encourage you to reflect on the same question.

Do you believe that God has a plan for you? Not in a way where your life has been predetermined and you have to go about finding the clues. More so, that you are irreplaceable in your beauty and uniqueness, and the World needs you and your gifts. You are free to discover the person you are, and then choose how to grow into your best self. All the stuff of life will still happen, and it will be messy. Often it is in the messiest of life that we find wisdom and grace and humility. Maybe you'd prefer other outcomes such as ease and success, except those are fleeting.

Take a moment to imagine if you took a leap of faith, and trusted that God was there, in all things - good and bad. Your true value and the strength to accept all of life, not just the parts you want, will arise in a profound way. Real peace becomes yours, not because everything is going your way, but because you now have a companion in Christ who will share everything. Let Christ carry your burdens and give you the insight you need and want. God's love is so much bigger than we realize if we are willing to be open to receiving it.

Peace,

Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal

Christian Service Awards 2015

Each year the Catholic Community Foundation (CCF) recognizes outstanding eighth grade students from throughout the Diocese who display a love and understanding of their Catholic faith and articulate a commitment, not only to performing acts of service, but to living a service focused life. Recipients of the prestigious Christian Service Award are honored by the Bishop at a special ceremony and receive an $8,000 Catholic high school tuition scholarship.  In the past five years fifteen St. Francis Xavier School students have received this prestigious award.

This year St. Francis Xavier School was proud to have two finalists (Holly Burns and April Lopez) and two recipients (Talle Donley and Aidan Sanford) of the Christian Service Award from our outstanding eight grade class.  These students live out our school motto of being a kid for others and we are so proud of them.

A new CCF Christian Service Award was created through the generosity of the Schramm family  (Hailey '12, Patrick '14) to further the mission of the CCF as well as honor our pastor Fr. Dan.  Congratulations to Talle Donley for receiving the inaugural Fr. Sullivan Ignatian Spirit Award and to Aidan Sanford for receiving the Anne and Vincent Cannella Award.

Sixth and seventh grade students and parents should visit http://www.christianserviceawards.org/index.php to find out about the award and begin tracking service hours in anticipation of applying the fall of eighth grade.
