Important Reminder of SFX Cell Phone Policy

This is an important reminder notice for the whole school community: students, teachers and parents. Our SFX cell phone policy for students requires that cell phones be turned off and stored in the student's backpack during school hours and while on campus. Even if the dismissal bell has rung, students are not to be using cell phones until they are off campus, designated by exiting the gate. If a student breaks this rule, the student's phone will be confiscated and held by the teacher. JUG will be assigned and students will retrieve their phones from the teacher who took it, at the end of the school day. If there should be a second offense the student's phone will be turned into the Principal's Office, and the student can retrieve his or her cell phone personally from Ms. Cavnar at the end of the school day, along with receiving a second JUG. A third JUG is grounds for suspension. Cell phones should never be used during the school day. No texting, no screen shots or photographs, and no communicating home via your personal cell phone should ever take place during school hours. School phones are available in every classroom, the nurse's office and the front office if students need to contact parents or if parents need to contact students. This is a reminder of our school policy and every student and parent agreed to uphold this policy by signing the Family Handbook at the start of the school year. We are reminding all about this important policy for the safety and privacy of each member of our school community.Thank you to each of you for honoring this practice.

Teacher Appreciation Basketball Games

Come Enjoy the FUN!

Thursday, the 5th grade basketball players played against the 6th grade team in our first annual teacher appreciation night and it was a blast to watch. The boys wrote kind letters to their teachers inviting them to see them play in a game. Many of the teachers showed up along with administration, parents and friends.

The boys normally don't play in front of a crowd so they were loving it! The boys were introduced in the dark to music and a spotlight. Ben Sanford and Max Tiffany did the play by play over the loud speakers and DJ Ryan Ruoff kept the play entertaining all game long with music.

Next Tuesday at 3:30 the 7th and 8th graders are going to do the same game but with a pre game show and half time show put on by the 7/8th grade girls. The girls just got done with a dance unit and the best dances were chosen to perform at the game. The 7th and 8th grade boys are personally inviting teachers to the game but I am inviting EVERYONE to come and enjoy the event! You don't want to miss this, I promise!

See you there!!  Coach Mitchell

Dear St. Francis Xavier Families,

There was a sobering exercise I was required to complete in college that guided my path more than most. I was to write my own eulogy. An obituary or epitaph would have been hard enough, but to imagine what loved ones would remember suddenly shifted my sense of priorities. No one would mention my GPA, my trophies, my achievements or my accomplishments. Instead a eulogy would reflect upon what I valued, who I loved, what I cared about, and what difference I made in others' lives.

Maybe more than anything else that a child brings to school, is a sense that who she or he is matters, what they do and how they treat others matters, what and who they dismiss or ignore matters. "Highlights," a magazine for children, reports that the Top 3 Concerns based on letters to the magazine are: Friends (making friends, finding a real friend), Siblings (fighting with siblings, feeling jealous) and Parents (overprotecting, finances, time together).

Relationships are central to our students' lives and social media can provide an illusion of false friends or misguided perceptions of others' opinions of oneself. Please help your children understand the impact of ones' words in texts or emails, ones' actions captured in messages or photos or emoticons, and the inability to take back or delete what one sends out electronically. It matters. We all know that a young person's brain is still developing, so their decision making is still evolving and they need your guidance and vigilance. I can truly report that kids who are not given cell phones are happier and more well adjusted without the pressure of constantly being connected to the gossip, trash talk, and false sense of power over others.

I was deeply touched by the following reminder and share it with you so you might also find strength in what tugs at us...
"And everyday the world will drag you by the hand yelling, 'This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!'
And each day, it's up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, 'No. This is what's important." - Iain Thomas

We know that our kids are what is most important in our lives. Please help them know this, and help them uphold their value in how they relate with others.

Peace,
Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal
