Catholic Schools' Week is coming up!

Please plan to join us for Mass on Sunday, January 25th to kick off this National tradition. St. Francis will be celebrating our Catholic Faith by promoting and practicing kindness. Students will be taking a kindness pledge and they will be tasked with performing small acts of kindness. We believe this celebration of kindness will greatly impact our personal and academic relationships.

Please go to St. Francis Xavier Jesuit Elementary School Facebook page, and read the article by Andrew Howard '13 on his recent trip to Goa for the Exposition of the Relics of St. Francis Xavier.  Great story about his experience.

Dear St. Francis Xavier Families,

As we pause to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King this weekend, how will we prepare our kids to grow up as peace makers with courage and conviction? Dr. King took his faith to heart and allowed Scripture to challenge him enough to act. Pope Francis challenges us in a similar way today. Are we truly putting our faith into action in the everyday?

A wise Jesuit would often caution his students, "If you go out into the world comfortable with the way it is, we have failed you." Among our five Jesuit SLEs (Student Learning Expectations) is that of being Committed to Doing Justice. I love how the kids pick up on the doing part and remind us that one must act or serve or lead in order to be just. It's not just an idea but a commitment.

I'm not sure how your students will spend their day on Monday, but I hope you will support our commitment to doing justice with examples from your own life. Often the opportunity arises quiet simply as your child questions if something is fair, or wonders aloud about the poor or homeless or those who are killed through violence. Sometimes they will feel helpless, or just the opposite, they will privilege themselves as better than or more deserving. Your guidance and willingness to tackle these teachable moments will greatly impact students. Bias can be passed on just as compassion can be.

I once asked my mom why she had so many children, (there were five of us). She told me that she hoped that one of her children would be someone who made a difference in the world, someone who would make it a better place. Naturally we each thought it was up to us; how clever of her to leave the possibility open. At mass our kids sing "Go Make a Difference" with vigor and clapping. It's a catchy rhythm that stays with you long after you've been singing. Thank you for keeping this SLE of committed to doing justice at the forefront of your family life. Let's walk with courage together.

Peace,
Ms. Kim Cavnar, Principal
