Great way to keep in the loop!

Dear St. Francis Xavier Families,

Happy...before you get out of bed in the morning, pause to give thanks for everything. If you speak directly to God in giving thanks, your relationship will grow closer, and you'll begin to remember how much you are loved. Gratitude will grow in you as an attitude, and you won't be able to contain your happiness which means other people will benefit from your overflow, including your kids. Help teach them to give thanks by feeling grateful first. Celebrate a little gratitude each day as a family, maybe at dinner or before bed. Allow one another to share the why of whatever it is she or he is grateful for so that the value of the moment is understood by all. Talk about family bonding!

New...with every sunrise we're given a new chance to grow, to learn, to stretch ourselves into something more. Breathe in the moment and try to really live in the moment of now. We can reflect and we can plan, but we can only live now in this amazing state of newness. It can be exciting to be given a sense of the new, the never before, the opportunity to create in new ways. Do you feel the inspiration? Especially as kids mature they sometimes treat time as an enemy, either rushing or procrastinating. What if they befriended time as the gift-giver of something new, yet to be discovered? Wouldn't that be an adventurous way to live? They will need grown-ups in their lives to model this way of proceeding, and to remind them that there is more than meets the eye. Please show them the way.

Year...hmmm; we measure life hoping we can somehow better control it if we place it in chunks like minutes, days, weeks, years. It can be fun to anticipate special events and celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. The living in between part can be filled with so many experiences that we feel overwhelmed if we keep measuring...How am I doing? Am I achieving the success I should? Do I measure up compared with my peers? When will I know if I'm good enough? I am often taken by surprise when students tell me with pride that they push themselves to do their best. I know that they have learned to work hard, to try to exceed their limits, and to keep reaching for their goals - all good qualities. Yet the metaphor of one pushing oneself is wrought with strife of something unnatural, of some being that needs constant aggressive action, of never being satisfied, of not being able to be in the moment but rather always about getting somewhere next. What an awful weight to bear so that one can be admired. I think we can do better for our kids so that their drive rests in constant pursuit of their personal best which involves elements of personhood as a whole being - body, mind and soul. It includes room to listen to where God is calling us and maybe even time to rest in God's presence, so we an remember where we came from and where we're going, and who we belong to by the power of love. Then our hard work and achievements really do reflect God's glory (A.M.D.G.).

May your family enjoy the very best in the unfolding of these gifts - Happy New Year!
