Play it safe
Safety should always be on the forefront of our minds, especially here at Christmas time. For most, this is the busiest season of life with all of the decorating, parties, cooking, shopping, and traveling that families do. Hazards lie in each of these areas, so it is important to always pay attention and be safe. Here are just a few areas to be mindful of this season:
  • Decorations- Be sure to put heavy glass ornaments up top and away for small children. Also, pay close attention to the materials used in your holiday decor. Some items could be an irritant to eyes, skin and lungs. Don't forget to use a safe step ladder when climbing and not a chair or other furniture. Learn more decorating safety tips.
  • Parties- Whether you are hosting or attending a party, think safety. Don't drink and drive. It's not worth it. Your family needs you and so do the families of others on the road with you. Also, if you are hosting, be sure to baby proof areas that small children may be in. You may not think that small pebble and candle knick knack on the coffee table is a hazard, but it can become one quite quickly if a child swallows a pebble and gets choked or tries touching the flame. Learn more party safety tips
  • Cooking- So many accidents happen this time of the year in the kitchen. It's good practice to make sure children stay out of the kitchen during meal preparations. Hot pans and knives easily dance all over the kitchen when the cook is in a hurry to get a meal prepared. It is important to also remember to make sure the pot handles are turned in towards the stove and not hanging over so they don't get hit, causing a burn hazard. Learn more food safety tips
  • Shopping- Criminals are everywhere this time of year. Always be on alert while shopping. Make sure your purse or wallet is secure. Consolidate your purchases into one or two large bags if possible in order to best keep track of everything. It is also a good practice to walk to your car with your keys in your hand so that you can quickly access your vehicle. Be sure to check the back seat to make sure no one is hiding in the car. Learn more shopping safety tips.
  • Traveling- Whether you travel or host, think safety. The fatality rate increases this time of the year, so be sure to have a designated driver so your guests can make it home safely after a holiday party. Your cell phone is a distraction, so put it away while driving. You don't want to cause an accident and hurt yourself or others because you were texting or making a call. Learn more holiday travel tips.
Though this list is not complete, we hope that you will be inspired to "think safety" in all that you do this season. You are a valued member of GreyStone Power and we hope these tips will help you have a safe and happy holiday for many years to come.

Scholarship deadline
It's hard to believe that another year is winding down. Each year, it feels like time passes by faster and faster, and before you know it, you may have a new college graduate in the family.

While they are in school, be sure to take advantage of all of the scholarship opportunities for them. There are hundreds out there just waiting to be researched, applied for and won. But in order to win a scholarship, you have to first apply.

As a member of GreyStone Power, you may have a student that is eligible for one of the two scholarships that we offer: the Walter Harrison or the GreyStone Power Foundation scholarship.

Don't miss the opportunity to apply while you can. Applications for the Walter Harrison Scholarship must be received by Jan. 30, 2016 in order to be considered. Winners will be announced on April 1 for the $1,000 scholarship which can be applied to academic expenses at any accredited two- or four-year university, college or vocational-technical institute in Georgia.

You will have a bit longer to prepare for the GreyStone Power Foundation Scholarship as the deadline for it does not fall until April 15, 2016. Five winners will be awarded a $3,000 scholarship.

For more information about either scholarship, or to download an application, visit greystonepower.com
