Make Turkey Day a safe day

There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes on Thanksgiving. Whether you share a quiet meal with a loved one or enjoy time with extended family, making the perfect Thanksgiving meal doesn't happen by itself.

Did you know that Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment according to the National Fire Protection Association? There's a lot you can do this year to ensure the safety of both your family and your home.

  • When you have a meal cooking, stay in the kitchen with it. I know it sounds crazy, but don't put something on the stove and just walk away.
  • If you are cooking something in the oven for a long period of time, be sure to check on it frequently.
  • Make sure you keep the children out of the kitchen when you are cooking, especially when you are taking things off the stove or out of the oven. They could run into you and easily get burned.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. If something does catch on fire, you want to know about it instantly.
  • For more safety tips, check out Thanksgiving Safety Tips.

    Winter rates in effect
I think we can all agree that this fall has been a bit unusual. The warm weather and overdose of rain have thrown many for a loop, especially all of the outdoor ball teams. Just when we think the cold weather has arrived, it warms up again.

No matter what setting you find your thermostat on, you can trust that we have you covered, especially now that our competitive winter rates have gone into effect, running from November through May.

In the Residential Rate Survey for winter 2015, the Georgia Public Service Commission lists GreyStone's rates as the fifth lowest in the state among 41 cooperatives. That ranking is based on the 1,000 kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage mark, which is the closest average of our members per month.

By the time spring arrives, you will continue to enjoy our competitive rates as announced by our President/CEO Gary Miller at our 78th Annual Meeting of Members with a rate reduction. "As a result of a multi-year process of negotiating a new power supply project, we received very effective pricing that will provide affordable power you need for many years to come. Because of this, we will be restructuring our rates which will result in a rate reduction beginning in spring of next year," said Miller. "You can expect to pay less next year than you did this year for power."

By adjusting your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower, you should notice a difference on your electric bill. You can also find additional resources to help you save money by visiting greystonepower.com or togetherwesave.com

Want to see how we measure up? Compare our rates with other cooperatives in the state to see how we rank.
