Play it safe

With Christmas right around the corner, we are in the midst of decorations and parties. Play it safe this year by following a few safety tips that will keep you and your family from becoming a statistic.

Use only lights that have been safety tested and have the UL label.
Be sure to test each light string for shorts, broken sockets, frayed cords or faulty plugs before attempting to use them.
Do not staple or nail through a light string or electrical cord.
Do not overload outlets. Use surge protector strips if multiple outlets are needed.
Keep your fresh cut trees watered and place away from heat sources, such as heat registers, fireplaces, radiators and televisions.
Always unplug your lights before going to bed or leaving home.
Recycle your Christmas tree after the holiday. Be sure to remove all lights and decorations first. To find a recycle location near you, visit keepgeorgiabeautiful.org.
