Scholarship time
If you are just now getting started in the scholarship race, you may have found that many deadlines have already passed for a lot of different local and national scholarships. Even so, there are still a lot of good ones that you can apply for, such as the GreyStone supported Walter Harrison Scholarship or the GreyStone Power Foundation Scholarship.
Each year, GreyStone coordinates and reviews entries from local student members for a chance to win either of these scholarships. Deserving students are given this opportunity to further their education with a little less financial stress.
The Walter Harrison Scholarship awards six $1,000 scholarships. The competition is tough as applicants compete against students submitted by electric cooperatives from all across Georgia. All applications must be received by Jan. 31, 2014.
The GreyStone Power Foundation Scholarship awards five $3,000 scholarships to GreyStone Power members or their children who are either seniors in high school or currently enrolled in college for the fall of 2014. All applications must be received by Apr. 11, 2014.

Holiday Safety
We know we are supposed to inspect the lights for wire damage or shorts before putting them on the tree. We remember that the tree needs to be watered constantly so that it won't dry out. We are even aware that it is not a good idea to put a candle near the tree or anything else flammable. But.... how many times have you caught yourself forgetting to do one of these things?
You may have caught yourself saying, "Oh, the lights just flickered once. They will be all right this season." Or how about, "I'm sure the tree probably needs water, but I will do it tomorrow when I have more time." Are you guilty as charged? We all are at some point and time. This just means we are lucky. We could have easily become one of the many holiday statistics.
Don't chance it this year. Take the right precautions and educate your family on holiday safety. Be sure you know what to do when it comes to the following safety areas:
