Oh no! We've lost power.
When the power goes out, one of our first thoughts is usually "what could have caused the outage?" Our second is usually, "when will the power be back on?" Both are very good questions with equally good answers.
Outages happen for a number of different reasons--animals, downed trees or branches, car accident and weather, just to name a few. Over the past few weeks, we have been hit hard with heavy winds and lots of rain. Both of these factors contribute greatly to trees or branches falling across power lines, causing outages to many.
When outages occur, most of us expect that power will be restored fairly quickly. But when a large storm causes significant damage, it could take longer for our linemen to repair the lines. Our crews work hard, long hours in order to safely restore service to the largest number of members in the shortest amount of time possible.
When crews begin researching the cause of the outage, they have to consider many different sources and have to fix the big problems (transmission lines, substations) first before power can flow to your home! Line crews start pinpointing the problem by first looking at:
- High-voltage transmission lines (typically only damaged during a hurricane or tornado)
- Distribution substation
- Main distribution lines
- Tap lines
- Individual homes
Act smart and be safe
- Stay away from fallen power lines. If you see any, report them to us immediately by calling 1-866-GREYSTONE (1-866-473-9786). Do not attempt to go near or touch them. Electricity could still be flowing through them.
- Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed. Be mindful of your perishable food.
- Use portable generators as directed. Make sure it has been properly installed by a licensed electrician. If not installed properly, harm could come to those in the home (carbon monoxide poisoning, fire) or crews working on the power lines (electrocution).
