Civic Action Phoenix Class

On December 18th, nearly 180 North Lawndale community members crowded into the Christiana campus of North Lawndale College Prep  for an active discussion about conflict and violence in the community - and the ways that Dr. King's principles of nonviolence might help.

NLCP students put Dr. King's nonviolence principles into practice each day at NLCP as they build our peaceful "beloved community."

Mr. Smith's CAPs class at Christiana decided earlier in the fall that teaching parents and families the principles they learn at NLCP might make a difference - and be the best way for them to help their community.

The students then went to work.  They planned the night.  They came up with incentives to spur participation.  They made 100s of personal calls to parents.  They checked parents in, answered questions, and led all the workshops for the evening.  They even wrote their own grant request to cover all the costs - and got it!

On a cold December night, the students led some amazing and interesting conversations about conflict and alternative ways to address it.  Then they all sat down and broke bread together, as a community.  It was refreshing to behold - and particularly wonderful for the students to see so many families responding positively to what they had to share.

Overall - a heartwarming night and experience.  Nothing like intentional youth activism making some real hope in a gritty world.

Reading, Writing, and Thinking at NLCP

Many of you are very familiar with the successes of our outstanding sports teams. They have brought home city, sectional, and state championships. You may not be as familiar, however, with our academic teams which are also taking the city by storm.

The NLCP Debate team

NLCP's Debate Team, led by Coach Lavie Raven, is forcing the entire Chicago Debate League (CDL) to take notice. Debate requires students to read and analyze large amounts of research in order to make an argument, support it with evidence, and make a call for change.  Students do not know until the moment of competition whether they will have to argue the affirmative or negative side of the issue. Therefore, they have to be knowledgeable about both.

Practicing and brainstorming

NLCP students could be content with learning the pre-packaged research given to them by the CDL like most other schools, but they are not. In addition to mastering the given content, they conduct their own research on the topic as well. The students like to bring a culturally relevant flare to the global topics given by the League. This year's topic is about the US economic engagement in Venezuela, Cuba, and Mexico. To bring this issue closer to home, NLCP students are researching whether or not the US should close immigrant detention centers and open new schools.

After the students develop their arguments, they collaborate with the artists from Raven's University of Hip Hop Club to create art that supports their arguments. The students from Debate and Hip Hop come together and turn evidence into Spoken Word, poetry, murals, and other forms of artistic expression. They use the arts during the competition to support their oral arguments. No other team in the League is taking these extra efforts!

Students preparing their arguments

Our NLCP students spend over 48 hours preparing for the monthly tournaments. When asked if all the hard work is worth it, NLCP junior Gary Solomon said, "Yes. It's important to make people aware of important issues. Debate has increased my focus in class and made me better at working under pressure." Gary also enjoys the time he gets to socialize and discuss issues with students from other schools during the two day tournaments.

Raven is proud of the work of his team. He is pleased with the, "...Great work and labors on the part of our debaters since August!  We are happy to come away with wins, and more importantly for having an impact on the audience and spreading confidence in student voice and agency in the CDL".

To learn more about upcoming competitions, please contact Coach Raven at lraven@nlcphs.org.

Phoenix Soar
16 sophomores from Collins applied for, and have been selected to participate in,  Phoenix Soar: a new mentoring program focused around the sophomore project.

The program pairs NLCP students with young professionals and provides opportunities to take trips to various sites in Chicago.

The first trip was a behind the scenes visit to U.S. Cellular Field (White Sox stadium).

In March the group will visit the 'maker space' that has been installed at the Harold Washington Public Library.

NLCP Track Team Shines On National Stage!

This past weekend NLCP invaded Texas A&M University home track in College Station, Texas. This was a great way to start 2014!

The following athletes traveled to Texas A&M: Imani Payton, Terry McGee, Edquinette West, Danielle Lamb, Khydeshia Bouie and Briyahna Desrosiers . The A&M meet is the biggest indoor high school meet in the country. The athletes delivered phenomenal results on a National stage. North Lawndale College Prep left their mark on the track at Texas A&M, this past weekend!
Briyahna Desrosiers at Texas A&M!

Edquinette, Khydeshia, and Danielle all gave solid performances and ran their season-best times. Khydeshia ran the 4th best time for all  juniors in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.21.

This was only the beginning of a meet record setting night. Imani ran an Illinois Indoor H.S. #1 400 meter time of 50.20 (which was the first school record of the weekend to fall). Terry McGee competed in the 400 m dash and ran an Illinois #4 time of 51.11(his new PR). What happened next no-one in the building. including myself, expected. Briyahna Desrosiers set the H.S. track world on its head with a U.S High School indoor # 1 time of 55.50 (new NLCP record) in the 400 meter dash. In running that time, Briyahna insured that she will have her pick of any college she wants (she has now received scholarship offers from University of Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Texas Christian University, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and a host of other schools). This all took place within the first hour of the meet with two events down and 3 runners advancing to the finals, which would take place on Saturday. Briyahna was not done for the evening  - as she went on to run the U.S. #5 and Illinois #1 time of 24.89 in the 200 meter dash. Not to be out done, Terry McGee, turned in the Illinois #2 time in the 200m dash with a time of 22.65 as day one came to a close.

Day 2 started with Imani breaking the NLCP school record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.29 and making his second finals of the weekend. Next, Terry ran himself into the finals of the 60m dash. After a short break in the action Imani finished 4th in the 60m hurdles finals in an IL #1 time of 8.23 -an NLCP school record. Terry returned to finish 8th over all in the 60m dash in school record and IL #1 7.06. Next cam 400m finals time and everyone was waiting to see if Briyahna would do today.  For about 320 meters it looked like Briyahna was about to do the unthinkable (which would have been run the indoor 400m dash in under 54 seconds) but sadly with about 80 meters to go she got spiked by another runner and ended up finishing 2nd.   But her point was made the night before and doing that 320 meters that she would be a factor in March at the New Balance Indoor National Championship at the armory in New York City. Imani and Terry both have also qualified for the New Balance Indoor Nationals in two events with their amazing weekend at Texas A&M.

All in all -  NLCP left College Station with:
  • US #2 IL#1 girl's 400, US#5 IL #1 girl's 200,
  • US #10 IL#1 boy's 60m Hurdles,
  • IL#1 boy's 60m dash,
  • IL #1 & #3 boys 400m dash,
  • IL #2 boy's 200m and;
  • Imani is the IL leader in long jump 21ft11in.

Between the three they picked up 10 scholarship offers.
Next up for NLCP Track is the University of Arkansas High School invite on Saturday January 18th.

Joke of the Month:

An elderly woman called 911.

"I'd like to report a fire !" she exclaimed.

Accustomed to hysterical callers - the operator responded calmly.

"Where is the fire, Ma'am ?"

"It is in the kitchen !" she blurted.

"And where is that ?"

"It is right off the living room !" she said - her voice rising.

"Where is your house - Ma'am ?"

"It is at the end of the driveway !!!" she said - even more agitated.

The operator remained calm.
"Ma'am, we know that.   How are we going to get there ?"

The elderly lady could  take no more.

"Well I don't know !  Don't you have those shiny red trucks !!!"
