NLCP Entrepreneurship Students Attend NFTE Chicago 2013 Youth Summit

On November 6, 2013, twenty of our NLCP Entrepreneurship students joined over 400 Chicago Area students at the inaugural NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) Youth Summit.

Demetrius Coleman, Marqueze Isby, Kelly Patton, Kayla Washington, Junisha Payton, Marquise Jefferson, Dejonte Coleman, Catherine Hutchins, Mr. Henry, Kaprisha Martin, Diamond Jackson

The one day event was held at the Chase Auditorium in downtown Chicago. NFTE's mission is to provide programs that inspire low-income students to stay in school, recognize business opportunities, and graduate with a plan for success.

NLCP has partnered with NFTE for the past eight years to provide our students with the knowledge needed to start and operate their own businesses. The students prepare and present business plans that include opportunity recognition; market research; promotion and sales; and, business financials. Focusing on the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs - a positive mental attitude, the ability to recognize opportunities where others only see problems, and openness to creative solutions - creates valuable qualities in our NLCP students. Our goal is to help our students understand how to achieve financial independence and personal satisfaction.

Brian Babylon: Chicago born comic and radio host  - one of the hosts for the event

During their classes, students develop business plans around ideas for products or services that they select. Since they own the ideas, this allows them to energetically apply the skills (research, reading, written and oral communications, math, science, and social studies) that they have been developing in many of their other high school courses. The students first develop a Written Business Plan and then convert the essential elements of that plan into an oral presentation. The NLCP student business plans are analyzed and evaluated by experienced business executives from the Chicago Area during classroom sessions. At the end of the process, NFTE sponsors a series of in-class business plan competitions that allow students to receive financial awards for outstanding work.

From the Principal's Desk:

This morning as students walked into our school, they were greeted by three of our teachers line dancing. Music blaring, peals of laughter, students joining in: this was not how my teachers ever acted when I arrived at high school!

What was the occasion? It's Tuesday. Ms. Rainey, Ms. Fuller and Ms. Mathew greet students like this every week. On Fridays, volunteers from Old St. Pat's greet our students with cheers, high-fives and noisemakers. Mr. Kelly and I often have a baseball greeting, getting kids in rundowns and tagging them out (and it's the rare kid who gets past me! I'll get you next time, Nadia!) Mr. Horan  shakes students' hands and makes references to 1970s folk songs. They usually smile politely. Mr. Thorne plays DJ, mixing it up, one day Michael Jackson, another day a song professionally recorded by NLCP staff with a rap about being on time for school. And Mr. Westerfield...let's just say he has a unique style that always gets a response.

Then there are the teachers and counselors who meet the students right inside the doors-asking how they are, giving them make-up work, lending them a tie, letting them know in ways big and small that we care about them. And it continues throughout the day.

Most CPS school days begin with a pat down and a walk through metal detectors. At NLCP, we believe that to motivate kids and get them ready for college we need to form relationships, build community and wrap our arms around our kids tightly. Because when our kids feel secure, the sky is the limit, and they can focus on becoming better readers, writers, scientists, artists and scholars-and then they go to college. We build a safe school environment by building relationships and trust, not by simulating a visit to a prison.

So stop by some morning and join us to see what really sets us apart- how the greatest group of adults in Chicago join together to build our Phoenix Community; to help your kids understand how capable and brilliant they are, and get them ready to shoot for the stars!

YOU'RE INVITED!

DECEMBER 18 - 5:30-8:30PM,

CHRISTIANA CAMPUS

Join us for a Christmas Celebration of Peace and Non-Violence.

Your beautiful young people have been studying and practicing Dr. King's principles of non-violence at school.  They want to showcase this work for you.  They want to teach you what the NLCP "beloved community" is all about.  They want to talk with you about how Dr. King's philosophy might help to strengthen the community outside the school.

And if that's enough by itself, consider this: the first 50 adult guests will receive a gift bag with all kinds of goodies, including $20 in cash.  There will also be dinner served, a raffle for an iPad and $250 gift cards, and fun and games for younger siblings.  Who would pass up the chance to get all that?

This is a free event, open to families of BOTH Christiana and Collins students.  Remember, December 18, 5:30-8:30, Christiana campus!

NLCP impact:

North Lawndale had and continues to have an impact on my life. I transferred to NLCP because I truly believed the vision that the administration had for the school and the future of the students who attend school there. NLCP exposed me to various opportunities that helped me to strengthen my pride in my heritage and my talents. North Lawndale College Prep gave me the courage to attend a college away from home in another state which became a launching pad for my independence as an adult. The exposure I had to the benefits/importance of attending a HBCU was given to me by NLCP on a college tour.  The impact of what North Lawndale College Prep coupled with the rearing I received from my family are the reasons I am successful today.

Highlights of NLCP experience:

The programs that have impacted me most were: the college trip I attended and the drama class I took. The drama class gave me an outlet for my talent of acting which was vital in building my self esteem at such an impressionable age during my teen years. That drama class allowed me to be in two plays at the school and gave me the exposure to be cast in a play with Looking-glass Theatre.

NLCP role in your success:

If I had not attended and graduated from NLCP I believe that, despite my families background in education, I would have not ventured out into the world which would have limited my success. North Lawndale did the leg work and confirmed that the standards my family had set for me had truth to them.

Your current professional career field and area of responsibilities:

Currently I am working for a private fine arts college in the admissions department. I am responsible for giving students vital information about the institution and aiding them through the process of applying to college. In addition, I am pursuing my dream of being a filmmaker as well. I am starting a media production company, Th3VoiCe1 Productions, beginning March 2014.

Employer and Job Title:

The Art Institute of Houston - Assistant Director of Admissions

Accomplishments that you are proud of :

NLCP Partner Colleges: Illinois College

On November 18th, 21 Seniors traveled to Jacksonville, IL to visit Illinois College. IC is a small, 4 year, private liberal arts college. This coed college is located in a large town in a rural setting. It offers bachelor's and master's degrees. Total enrollment is around 1000 students, with 285 students being Freshmen!11:1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures intense focus on and comprehensive guidance for each student. A rich array of experiential learning opportunities including Study Abroad, student-faculty research, internships, community service projects and Division III athletics complement the academic program.

Interesting fact: Illinois College was a center of the abolitionist movement. President Beecher was an outspoken opponent of slavery. A grand jury indicted a group of students for harboring runaway slaves, and two campus houses are believed to have been part of the Underground Railroad.

Think Day Report

On Nov 20th we hosted Think Day and Seniors were asked to either apply to colleges or scholarships for 3 straight hours. The seniors completed 230 college applications submitted on that day alone! Go seniors! By now everyone should have at least 7 college applications submitted!

The seniors at the Collins Campus have submitted 492 applications which means that we are over halfway to our goal of 950 applications (10 per student)!

37 students have already been accepted into college.

Most exciting, the seniors have received over 1 million dollars in scholarships, $1,073,200 to be exact!

Joke of the Month:

"Ms. Francis, I ain't got no crayons !"

"Young man, you mean, 'I don't have any crayons. You don't have any crayons. They don't have any crayons.' Do you see what I'm getting at ?"

"I think so.  What happened to all the crayons ?"
