ISSUE: # 79
APRIL 2015
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
We are excited to unveil a new initiative for preschoolers this month entitled 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.  That sounds like a lot of reading but it takes less than a year at the rate of 3 books per day.  Why 1,000?  As children's author Mem Fox states "Experts tell us that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they learn to read for themselves." I love her 10 Read Aloud Commandments.  Our program provides reading incentives, tips for parents and caregivers and reading suggestion lists.  We want your kids to be excited and proud about their reading accomplishments and to enter Kindergarten ready to learn to read.  This initiative has been underwritten in part by the financial support of the individual members of the Library Board.  The launch/debut party will be held on April 15 (see below for details) but families are invited to sign-up at anytime after that.

Celebrate National Poetry Month, National Volunteer Week and National Library Week with us this month.  In recognition of National Volunteer Week (April 12-18), I would like to express our gratitude for the many folks who give us their time and expertise.  Thank you!

Ever wanted to play mini golf in the library stacks?  Here's your chance.  The Friends of the Library are holding a fundraiser later this month at the Elkins Park branch.  Fun for the whole family for $5 per person.

Finally, the library garden at Glenside is hosting its first planting party this month. So, it must be spring?  Right?

See you at the library (and on Facebook)!
