Building Community - Transforming Lives
ISSUE: # 78
MARCH 2015
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
Hard to believe, looking outside, that there are only 20 days left until Spring. Fortunately, we have a great line-up of programs this month to tempt you to venture out into the cold.  Some like our garden-related classes and pansy sales even foreshadow warmer weather!

We received official notice this week that our digital media lab grant proposal in the amount of $26,550, was successful.  Many thanks to those who responded to our survey in support of our application.  Stay tuned for exciting details about this project.

We are still collecting responses to our Overdrive survey .  We want to know what you like and don't like about this free service for delivering ebooks and downloadable audiobooks.  Many of the comments so far have focused on the nature and content of the collection and that is very helpful to us.  Montgomery County libraries provide access to almost 4 million physical items.  Our Overdrive collection, however,  is in its infancy, containing approximately 12,000 ebooks and 7,000 digital audiobooks.  Similarly, Zinio, our electronic magazine service, consists of 136 popular subscriptions.  Unlike print books, digital editions are controlled by a vast array of mind-numbing rules and conditions imposed by the publisher.  Some titles go away after 26 or 52 circulations Others, that would cost under $20 on Amazon or iTunes, are $80 - $105 in the library marketplace.  It is a challenge but we are committed to providing these formats.  Again, many thanks to those who completed the survey.

Finally, promoting preschool literacy in support of school readiness is one of our highest priorities.  This month, we celebrate Read Across America with all things Seuss.  In April, we will be distributing free copies of the One Book, Every Young Child title, Number One Sam, written and illustrated by Greg Pizzoli.  We will also be launching a new initiative entitled 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.  If you are responsible for a very young child, please, please, please, read aloud to them everyday. Bring them to the library.  Sign them up for our reading programs.  Share songs and fingerplays with them.  These and other literacy strategies are the foundation of lifelong learning and our library's mission.

See you at the library (and on Facebook)!
