Building Community - Transforming Lives
ISSUE: # 72
 SEPTEMBER 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
Congratulations to all our summer readers!  Many of you even took home prize(s) for your efforts.  Now it is on to school, back to work and for everyone else - gearing up to enjoy all the pleasures of autumn.  I am looking forward to harvest festivals, soup, and the colors, smells and books of fall.

September was chosen as National Library Card Sign-Up month for a reason.  Your school supply list should include "get a library card".  With it your student has access to our digital and print collections, databases such as World Book Online, Learning Express and so much more.  Our collections include resources for parents and caregivers.  We have also been exploring other ways in which we can work hand-in-hand with the School District to support learning success.  Stay tuned.  We have some great ideas.

This fall, we are actively planning ways in which to celebrate creative expression in our community.  If you are or would like to be an published author, we will be introducing a series of programs on the creative and practical aspects of writing.  In addition, we are organizing a Local Author Festival to showcase Cheltenham authors and their works.  The Festival will be held on Saturday, November 15 at the Elkins Park branch and will give local writers an opportunity to share and sell their works.  Space is limited.  If you would like to receive more information as it becomes available, please email me to be put on our mailing list.

Finally, we are at the beginning of Cheltenham Township's 2015 budget process.  The state has frozen library funding again for next year.  In 2008, we received $216,837 in state aid.  That amount has dropped to $119,758 for 2015.  Local funding accounts for 80% of our budget but that too has been frozen for four of the last five years.  Your donations make a difference.  This community's generosity has enabled us to maintain services at present levels and implement new initiatives.  Your support for our fundraising initiatives and those of our Friends is also greatly appreciated.  We are currently soliciting donations of costume jewelry for our Bling for Books sale that we hope to hold later this fall.  Thanks in advance for your help.

See you at the library (and on Facebook)!
