ISSUE: # 71
 AUGUST 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
It's hard to believe that August begins this week.  While July is our busiest month of the year, things will be hopping in our branches until Labor Day and the start of school.  Our dedicated staff loves the bustle and has some great programs planned this month.

If you have a child starting Kindergarten in September who is a little anxious about this new adventure, consider borrowing some books written with just that in mind.  Do a keyword search in our catalog using  'first day of school kindergarten' to get a reading list or ask our staff for suggestions.  Check out Franklin Goes To School in our online TumbleBooks collection.  Just click the icon on our homepage.  The East Cheltenham branch is also hosting a Countdown to Kindergarten party/program on August 27 for children and their families to mark this important event.

Author David Lubar will be dropping by the Elkins Park branch on August 7 to talk with kids ages 11+ about his books including Dunk and Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie.  Perhaps he will inspire some of Cheltenham's younger writers.

There are a lot of new books passing through the Processing Center right now.  Here are a few titles by some of my go-to authors:
Susan Elizabeth Phillips.  Heroes are My Weakness (modern romance).
Louise Penny.  The Long Road Home (series mystery).  Start with Still Life.  I also love the audiobooks.
Daniel Silva.  The Heist (thriller/suspense).
Deborah Harkness.  The Book of Life (fantasy). Completes the All Souls Trilogy.

The Glenside branch is now a Certified Wildlife Habitat as designated by the National Wildlife Federation and is also an Audubon Society Bird Sanctuary.  Next year - butterflies!  If you or your family are visiting Glenside, ask for a garden tour.  You might go home with a squash or zucchini.

Tween and teen Star Wars fans are invited to an afternoon of crafting at the La Mott branch on August 7th.  In the meantime, try your hand at Star Wars origami on Tom Angleberger's site.  He is the author of  paper-folding Star Wars adventures featuring Origami Yoda, Jabba the Puppett and others.

Finally, for Throwback Thursday (or whatever day you happen to read this), here is a photo to file under 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'.  Pictured are the three top summer readers at the East Cheltenham branch in 1974.  From left to right:  Connie, Paulette and Nadine.  Congratulations to all summer readers then and now!

Photo from The Globe (?), August 29, 1974

See you at the library (and on Facebook)!
