Building Community - Transforming Lives
ISSUE: # 68
 MAY 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
We have multiple Master Gardener programs and our first library garden get-together scheduled - so it must be May.  I encourage you to bring your child(ren) to Glenside for  planting on May 21.  There is an increased awareness that gardening and good nutrition go hand-in-hand.

When I was little, I thought my grandparents' small urban backyard garden was the Garden of Eden,  even though the focal point was a peach, not an apple, tree.  Even though I could be a picky eater, I ate whatever grew there including rhubarb.  I wonder what our library children will remember about the Glenside garden?  We have rhubarb there too.

Our annual fundraising letter will be distributed in our branches this month.  If you are able to make a tax-deductible donation, it would be most appreciated.  We need additional funds to maintain robust, popular collections, upgrade our technology, create better people spaces, and continue our tradition of fabulous programming.  Despite declining or static revenues, we have been able to maintain and even expand services because of the generosity of the Cheltenham community.  Thank you!

The 2014-2015 state budget is still under review by the Legislature.  The Pennsylvania Library Association has an advocacy plan to offset the heavy hits public library funding has taken since 2008.  If you support increased library funding or if you are interested in learning more about this effort, please check out their website.

Do you have unwanted or unused costume jewelry?  Drop it off at your local branch anytime.  We are planning a Bling for Books sale in the fall and we need lots of merchandise!

We have added a new format to our collection called Playaway Bookpacks.  These kits include several popular children's books along with an MP3 audio playback device so beginning readers can listen and follow along in the book.  Search for "bookpack" in our catalog to see the titles available.  This format supports our commitment to promote early literacy.

Finally, if you haven't already, please 'like' us on Facebook.  We use Facebook to post photos, links to reading suggestions and interesting articles about literacy and libraries.  We also plan to introduce personalized reading suggestions in the near future.

See you at the library (and on Facebook)!
