Building Community - Transforming Lives
ISSUE: # 67
 APRIL 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
This year's National Library Week theme is "Lives Change @ Your Library".  Over my career, I have witnessed many examples of how true that is.  One of the great joys of public librarianship is making a difference for the better - whether it is helping a person start a business, deal with a difficult family situation, navigate a heath crisis or ace a school project.  Tuesday of National Library Week (April 15th) is National Library Workers Day which recognizes the contributions of all library workers.  Many thanks to all of the dedicated staff at CTLS who help "Lives Change @ Your Library".

As a community building project, we are introducing Food for Fines from April 1 to 13th.  Bring in non-perishable food items and receive $1 credit per item towards existing fines for a maximum credit of $5.  The credit cannot be applied to fees for lost or damaged materials or to future fines.  Items will be donated to local community food banks to help our neighbors in need.  We are happy to accept donations from library users without fines too!

Links to JobGateway, a statewide resource for job seekers and employers has been added to the Power Library and to our Online Resources.

I regularly read and listen to books written for teens.  As a librarian, I try to stay on top of trends and read all sorts of things outside my comfort zone that are popular with the public at large.  On the downside that once led to a Robert Ludlum binge summer but it also led me to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Rainbow Rowell.  Adults reading YA literature has become a phenomenon and has helped fuel the popularity of Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Book Thief and Divergent, among others.  It seems like a million articles have been written explaining the wherefors and whys but if you subscribe to the Reader's Bill of Rights, it doesn't matter.  For those of you who love YA, here is NPR's 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels.  Enjoy.

Many of our program descriptions listed below include the caveat "space limited, registration required".  We have become the victims of our own success and the limited programming space available in our buildings.  Some types of programs have become so popular that we will be enforcing participation limits in order to maintain a safe environment and a quality experience for attendees.  If required, please register in advance by phone, by email or in person and follow the age guidelines for each program.  Lastly, if your plans change, let us know so we can offer your spot to another person.  Thanks!

Finally, in a month that welcomes spring and celebrates libraries and poetry, you can still find tax forms at your local branch for that other April hallmark.

See you at the library!

Carrie Turner

Director
