Building Community - Transforming Lives
ISSUE: # 65
 FEBRUARY 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
Well, it certainly has been a wild winter so far.  Good for reading books and making soup but not so great for driving and walking the dog.  Closing our libraries for inclement weather is always a difficult decision.  Many times it boils down to whether or not we can keep our sidewalks and parking lots clear and safe.  If the weather is questionable, check our website or call us before heading out.  Hopefully, February won't have as many snow days.

Many thanks to residents who completed our collection survey.  Your input has given us valuable guidance for future collection decisions.  If you haven't taken the survey yet, there is still time through February 7th.  One fact that was evident from the responses we received - many people are unaware of all the resources the library provides (free-of-charge).  You can help us spread the word!  Make "did you know you can get that at the library?" part of your everyday conversations and you will be well on your way to becoming a library advocate.

On February 1st, all CTLS branches will begin circulating iPad minis that were purchased using donations received for materials.  This pilot program is designed to give Cheltenham residents the opportunity to experience the capabilities of mobile devices and  technologies.  The iPads come loaded with popular public domain ebooks and the Overdrive and Zinio apps so users can download items from our digital collections.  Borrowing these devices is a little more complicated than checking out a book or DVD.  Please read our iPad Checkout Agreement for more details.  In order to check availability, do a keyword search on "ipad mini equipment" in the catalog.

Just a reminder to check out Consumer Reports and Novelist Plus on our  homepage

Consumer Reports is the electronic version of the popular magazine.  Read reviews and recommendations before you purchase electronics, appliances, etc.

Novelist Plus is for readers.  This resource explores genres, read-alikes, series, fiction and non-fiction titles to help readers discover new authors and find their next great read.

Finally, Elkins Park is offering a series of sensory storytime classes.  The program is designed for children ages 3 to 5 who are not comfortable in large groups and who are sensitive to sensory overload.  Children on the autism spectrum or with other special needs are invited to participate.  Space is limited and registration is required.  Please help us spread the word by sharing this information with your neighbors, friends and family!

Stay warm and see you at the library!

Carrie Turner

Director

If you enjoy books in series (as I do), use tools like NoveList, What's Next (Kent Library District), eSequels or authors' websites to generate a list of the titles in reading order.

What I am currently (binge) reading: The Joanne Kilbourn mystery series that begins with Deadly Appearances by Gail Bowen.

What I am currently listening to:  The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley, read by Jayne Entwistle.   This is the latest title in the Flavia De Luce mystery series.  I highly recommend reading (or listening to) these in order.
