Building Community - Transforming Lives
ISSUE: # 64
 JANUARY 2014
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
Happy New Year!  I hope 2014 brings everyone health and happiness.  Needless to say, the library is a great place to start that quest.  We lend everything you need (except willpower) to support your resolutions.

My work resolutions for the New Year include increasing the number of library cardholders in our community and making sure that everyone knows what their library has to offer.  For example, did you know that we purchase additional copies of bestselling books and dvds for our Readers Express and Video Express collections?  And that these collections cannot be put on hold?  That means you could walk into one of our branches and find the newest and most popular titles sitting on the shelf.  Instant gratification.  You can check the status of RE and VE copies in the online catalog.

In support of our Strategic Plan, we will be surveying our community about many aspects of library services throughout the year.  Our first questionnaire focuses on Collections.  Please take a moment to respond to this short but important survey.  Paper copies will also be available in our branches.  Thank you!

You asked for it.  We have added Consumer Reports and Novelist Plus to our online digital collections. You can find buttons for both resources on our homepage.  Your library card barcode number is the key to accessing these databases.

Consumer Reports is the electronic version of the popular magazine.  Read reviews and recommendations before you purchase electronics, appliances, etc.

Novelist Plus is for readers.  This resource explores genres, read-alikes, series, fiction and non-fiction titles to help readers discover new authors and find their next great read.

As a new initiative, Elkins Park is offering a series of sensory storytime classes beginning in January.  The program is designed for children ages 3 to 5 who are not comfortable in large groups and who are sensitive to sensory overload.  Children on the autism spectrum or with other special needs are invited to participate.  Space is limited and registration is required.

Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to our public services staff and those behind the scenes who made 2013 such a successful year.  We are already planning some amazing programs for 2014.  It is a real pleasure to work in a community like Cheltenham Township.  Thank you for your support!

See you at the library!
