ISSUE: # 54
 MARCH 2013
FROM THE DIRECTOR, CARRIE TURNER
2011 head Many of this month's activities at our libraries betray a longing for spring.  The Friends of the Library at East Cheltenham are hosting their annual pansy sale and we have several master gardener programs scheduled.  We are also preparing the Glenside library garden for another season of planting, growing and harvesting.  Families are invited to join in on March 20 at 4 pm.

Beginning March 1, library users can pay for fines and lost or damaged materials with their credit card.  Because of security protocols this can only be done from home.  The minimum payment amount is $5 and there is a flat $1 fee for each transaction to help offset the costs to provide and maintain this service.  Of course, payments can still be made by cash or check at your local library without incurring a fee.  We hope this new service will prove convenient to our customers.

Several people have asked me about the status of our grant application for a digital media lab that would provide equipment and software to create, preserve and format pictures and other documents.  The grant is competitive and funded by the federal government.  Until the sequester issue is resolved, the process is in limbo.

Over 1,000 residents participated in our strategic planning process which is close to completion.  Stay tuned for more information on its unveiling.

The Glenside branch recently added a new museum pass to its collection for the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University.  The pass may be borrowed by any Cheltenham resident with an active library card and can be used to admit up to two adults and five children free-of-charge.  It can also be used for a 10% discount in the Academy Shop and Cafe.  For availability of other museum passes, simply enter the search term "museum pass" in our catalog,   I have also listed them below.  Passes may be borrowed for a period of 3 days.  This program is funded through the generosity of the Friends of the Library.

See you at the library!
