Letter from Pastor Bryan
Dear friends,
After prayerful consideration, I have decided to retire from parish ministry near the end of next year. My last Sunday as your pastor will be October 29, 2017. In the meantime, we have thirteen months of shared ministry still to come, and I am excited about that!
This decision was shared with the congregational council at its meeting Tuesday evening. I have previously met with the bishop, his representative, and the president and vice president of the congregation. We agreed I should share this decision with you now because of my long tenure as your pastor. We are planning an intentionally longer transition than is often possible, in order to best serve the needs of Shepherd of the Valley. There are many steps the congregation will take in the process that leads to calling its next pastor. This extended time will allow for the kind of deliberate preparations that serves this goal well. The details of this process, in which I will not be actively involved, will be developed by the council in consultation with the Synod. The next step is for the council to meet with the bishop's representative at its October meeting. This representative will help guide the council in developing a plan that is consistent with synod and ELCA practices, yet still tailored specifically for the needs and desires of this congregation. The congregation will be kept fully informed at every stage of the process as the customized plan and its steps are developed.
I have been privileged and blessed to serve as your pastor for 31 years so far, and I am looking forward to continuing in that service until my retirement. Even as the congregation will be working on a plan for its future, I will also be considering what my retirement will mean for me--I don't have all those details worked out yet, either. But I am looking forward to discovering all the wonderful things God has in store for both myself and for the congregation. May God continue to bless us in all the days and months and years ahead!
In Jesus' Name,
Pastor Bryan

Commemoration of St. Francis
Sunday, October 9
Sunday, October 9 we observe the second of three Sundays this fall which emphasize a different part of our 2017 Stewardship theme-- "Together We Give and Serve." We focus on Serve as we honor the witness of St. Francis, who lifted up care for the poor and regard for animals as important parts of our mission to serve the world in Jesus' name. The morning will include--
--introduction to the Good Gifts program of the ELCA, which is a way to provide farm animals to families to promote economic self-sufficiency. Farm-themed savings banks will be distributed (Ministry Moment)
--a blessing of stuffed animals for children, or any others who may wish to participate (Children's Message)
--service projects for a local animal shelter, including making dog treats, rope dog toys, and catnip toys (after worship in Founders Hall)
--"Petting Farm" on the patio (after worship) Anyone with an animal who would enjoy taking part, please see Julee Rich or Pastor Bryan

Stephen Ministry Training Class
Our Stephen Ministers are learning about listening this week. Please continue to pray for them as they grow in their ability to provide caring ministry on behalf of our congregation.
Listening is an essential part of Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers use active listening skills to help people recognize and accept the feelings they are experiencing. In this session Stephen Ministers learn and practice the skill of reflecting as a valuable listening tool. They explore the many facets of listening and talk about their own experiences so as to better understand when listening is effective and when it feels fake or makes a person feel uncomfortable.
