Bishop Erwin Reflects on the National Youth Gathering
Our Southwest California Synod Bishop Guy Erwin attended alongside our SOV youth, and he shared this report about the event:
Imagine 30,000 Lutheran high schoolers, all dressed in brightly colored t-shirts, fanning out from a central location to board buses to different parts of a city for service projects! One resident said it looked like an explosion at a Skittles factory! But it was a daily occurrence at the recent ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit last month. Over 300 young people from our synod and the Pacifica Synod joined them, and blended their teal-colored t-shirts into the colorful mix.

The ELCA's biennial National Youth Gathering has recently focused on cities with serious needs for volunteer help-the two previous gatherings were in New Orleans-and Detroit was also a place where our young people could make a difference-and that they did! They cleaned out overgrown alleys and boarded up derelict houses, they planted and cultivated gardens and parks, and they hauled and bagged refuse left in vacant lots. Some worked to sort and package over a million donated disposable diapers for babies living in poverty.
