Called ... Challenged ... Sent

These three words will be the focus of our annual Fall Stewardship Program. Beginning on Sunday, November 2, and continuing for three weeks, we will reflect on these themes in worship and study. A special study will be offered after worship each Sunday, from 10:45 - 11:30 a.m. in Founders Hall.

The weekly themes:

November 2 - Called to Follow

The account of the miraculous catch of fish in Luke 5:1-11 reminds us that when Jesus calls us to follow him, he very often call us to do so "in deep waters" - in those turbulent places of our lives and in our hearts that God can nonetheless use as places of blessing and new beginnings.

November 9 - Challenged to Grow

We remember the women who supported Jesus out of their own resources as well as the one who anointed him. The reading in Luke 7:36-8:3 gives examples to us of followers of Jesus who grew in their understanding of and response to God's grace and forgiveness.

November 16 - Sent to Serve

We sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples in the upper room, hearing our Lord's call to humble service. Luke 22:24-27, though brief, leads us to broad insights about the way in which responding and growing as followers of Jesus shapes our attitude to those around us, as well as our commitment to all those to whom we bear witness of the gospel of Jesus.

God calls us, challenges us and sends us. We respond, grow and serve. Plan on picking up a "Called ... Challenged ... Sent" packet on Sunday, November 2, and remain for the time of fellowship and study afterward!

(Note: For the three weeks of this program, Weekly Word groups may meet as usual to reflect on the provided guide, or may choose to participate in the after-worship event instead.)

LSS Update

LSS is currently under construction in their new location in Canoga Park - they plan to move in by the second week of November. The new facility looks good!

Thanksgiving

This year, LSS will have a limited ability to store frozen turkeys. Therefore they will give out turkey vouchers and boxes of trimmings. In early November, there will be boxes and flyers in church for everyone to pick up and fill with Thanksgiving groceries. Please bring groceries to SOV no later than Sunday, November 23. Financial donations will also be accepted.

Christmas

As in the past, LSS will distribute Christmas gifts to their client families. Donations are being accepted for unwrapped gifts for children ages 2-12. Please bring them in no later than Sunday, November 30.

Thank you for your kindness and support of the mission of LSS! Your generosity is what allows LSS to serve our most vulnerable.

Questions? Please email Dave Burtch or call him at 818.734.7411.

Book club
Book Club

The next Book Club meeting will be held on Sunday, November 16 at 10:45 a.m. in Vaswig Library. The November selection is "A Tale for the Time Being" by Ruth Ozeki. Everyone is welcome to join.

Giving Thanks With Financial Gifts

Soon, Thanksgiving will be here. When we begin serving the Thanksgiving meal, we will have passed the food in a manner that tried to make certain our guests were served first.

Our lifelong stewardship is much like the Thanksgiving meal. We make certain that the first fruits are given to God before satisfying our own needs. At the end of our life, there will be leftover gifts from God which we no longer need as we enter into His Kingdom. Was God present at your table during your lifetime? Is God's name on any of the leftovers?

To help plan your leftover gifts through a will, trust or financial asset, email our ELCA Gift Planner, Greg Shepherd or call him at 909.910.6823.
