Parish Education

At the last church council meeting, Marlene Filsinger was voted in to take over the Parish Education position. Marlene will replace Gina Goodman, who is stepping down. Many thanks to Gina for her service and to Marlene for stepping in!

Operation Gratitude this Saturday

Just a reminder that Operation Gratitude will hold a weekend assembly day this Saturday, August 23. We are sending a group from SOV to volunteer from 9 a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome to join. If you need a ride, contact Cindy Brown.

Children are welcome but must be at least 12 years old. Children between the ages of 12-16 must have an adult on the premises with them. There is a release form on the Operation Gratitude website that should be downloaded and filled out by every volunteer.

Natalie Rowland, one of our high school youth, baked the bread which was on our altar last Sunday. It is always a blessing to have handmade bread for Communion. Anyone who is interested in baking communion bread occasionally should contact the office or speak to Marsha Eubanks, chair of Altar Guild.

Anniversary Sunday on August 31

If you have a significant (five-year intervals or 50 years and up) wedding anniversary this year, please indicate so on the attendance registration form or contact the church office so that we may include you in the anniversary celebration.

Book Club

The next meeting of the SOV Book Club will be held on Sunday, September 21, in the library beginning at 10:45 a.m. Our September selection is The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. All are welcome to join.

First Aid, CPR and AED Training

SOV staff members are trained in CPR and first aid, as part of our commitment to provide a safe campus. The six-hour training is repeated every two years, with half the staff involved in alternating years.

CPR training includes practice with AED devices - Automatic External Defibrillators. Now widely seen in places of public gathering, they are computer-controlled machines which can assist in correcting a faulty heart rhythm. Use of these devices substantially improves survival rates, since the treatment can be given far sooner than paramedics can arrive at the scene.

Currently SOV does not have an AED device on campus. The unit is a one-time purchase, with minor maintenance costs (for batteries and sensor pads, which have a shelf life if not used). They cost about $1,300. Anyone interested in helping SOV acquire this potentially life-saving device, please speak to Jan Garris or Pastor Bryan.

Appreciated Stocks for Gift Annuity

With the run up in stocks over the last year, many individuals are faced with the decision to sell the stocks and capture the gains, but face a significant capital

gains tax.

An alternative to selling is to transfer the stocks into a charitable gift annuity and receive a favorable lifetime payout, and at the same time, avoid capital gains. Payout rates from charitable gift annuities are based on age. The older you are, the higher the payout. You will also receive a charitable tax deduction that you could use to convert some of your traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. Whatever is left in the charitable gift annuity at the end of your life would go to benefit your choice of charities.

To find out more, contact our congregation's gift planner, email Greg Shepherd or call him: 909.910.6823.

El Camino Pines
