Meet Our Stephen Ministers

Marlene Filsinger

I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, where I still call home. It was there that Brian and I were married and raised two sons. Our Lutheran faith kept us busy teaching and serving in many capacities throughout those years. Brian's work took us to Albany, NY for another 25 years. After teaching preschool, elementary, and middle school for 30 years, I retired. We moved to Woodland Hills to be closer to our sons. God had a plan for me at Shepherd of the Valley knowing my compassion for people. He found a place for me to serve and be part of his healing love for hurting people. Here I am now a Stephen Minister following Jesus' model of love and compassion. I am honored to serve you.

Spring Gala A Success  --
Baskets Still Available

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our school through this great fundraiser and fun night! The Silent Auction portion of the event made almost $5,400. Dinner and bingo were also a big hit. We are still calculating our earnings for those contributions.

There are still baskets of goodies available to purchase. Stop by the office to see a variety of items and services still available at the opening bid price (half the original value!). Remember that your dollars go directly to support our school.
Converting to Roth IRAs Using Charitable Gift Annuities

When you set up a Charitable Gift Annuity, you are able to increase your current income for life because you receive a percentage payout based on your age. The older you are the higher the payout. Most of that payout is also tax free income. You also receive a tax deduction.

Many times that tax deduction is more than you can utilize in any one year. This provides a great opportunity for you to use that tax deduction for converting a traditional IRA or 401k into a Roth IRA. Your new Roth IRA will now grow tax free and future withdrawals will also be tax free.  In addition, your heirs will also be able to inherit the Roth IRA without income taxation. Most importantly, whatever remains in the "charitable gift annuity" will benefit ministries of your choice.

To learn more, contact our congregation's Gift Planner, Gregory Shepherd at 909.910. 6823 or gregory.shepherd@elca.org.
