Lay-Distributed Communion
Shepherd of the Valley is beginning to offer lay distribution of communion to the extended congregation, which includes any who are unable to attend worship, such as shut-ins and the long-term sick. This will greatly multiply the frequency of communion among our extended congregation, significantly augmenting, but not replacing, pastoral visits.
The practice of lay-distributed communion is a recognized ministry of the church, which was formally re-authorized by the ELCA in 1997 in The Use of the Means of Grace: A Statement on the Practice of Word and Sacrament. In this ministry, lay people carry the communion elements from the altar at the conclusion of worship to those unable to be present. The visit includes a brief rite, which contains prayer, scripture, and a reminder of the Words of Institution which had been spoken during the congregation's worship. Normally, the in-home communion will be given soon after Sunday worship, although there are provisions for other patterns.
Anyone interested in becoming a lay communion visitor, or in the ministry in general, is invited to attend a training session on Sunday, March 16, at 10:50 a.m. The session will be held in the sixth-grade classroom and will last for about an hour. There is no obligation to commit until after the training is over. The expectation is that the visitor (or visitors, if going as a couple) will commit to making one visit a month for a year. Visitors will carry communion to the same person each month. Lay visitors may continue to renew their commitments annually, if they choose to do so.
The lay visitors will be commissioned into this ministry on Sunday, April 6, when the monthly sending rites will also begin. However, any visitors unable to be in worship on that date may still begin this ministry and be formally commissioned at a later date. If you have any questions, please speak to Scott Mullen, Deacon Chair of the church council, or to Pastor Bryan.

Emergency Food Needed
Lutheran Social Services
Thank you to everyone for their donations to the Regional Food Bank. They were greatly appreciated! Unfortunately, they are again out of food and the demand is high.
Please consider donating non-perishable food: canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, cereal. They particularly need food that can be easily opened, like canned goods with pop-tops that don't require a can opener (soup, stew, pasta). Please bring your donations to church, we will arrange to deliver them to LSS. Checks made out to LSS are especially helpful. Thank you for serving the least of HIS.
