Church Council Corner

"So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." Romans 12:5

In an effort to keep our church community informed of the church council's activities, our council president, Julie Rowland, is bringing you monthly updates.

During the council's monthly meetings, the council listens to committee reports and also reviews and approves minutes, financials and pastoral acts.

At February's meeting, we welcomed new council members:

Katie Riordan - Parish Life Chair
Scott Mullen - Deacon Chair

Discussion topics during the meeting included:
  • A plan for home communion to the extended congregation (shut-ins and others unable to join in Sunday worship) - training and implementation is underway.
  • Lenten evening worship services, coordinated by Chip Lee. Those attending will be encouraged to participate as readers and response leaders.
  • Pastor Bryan will be attending the National Conferences of the Evangelical Lutheran Education Association and the Association of Lutheran Development Executives, being held jointly in Florida. A week of R&R will follow. In his absence, Seminarian Julie Kelly will preach and lead worship on February 23 and March 2.
The council welcomes your concerns, comments, and/or suggestions, which help ensure SOV's continued efforts in offering God's good news.

Thanks from our Ministry Partners

Shepherd of the Valley supports a number of ministry programs each year through our budgeted benevolence program. These partners are working to further a mission and values that align with our church's.

We've been sharing the feedback we've recently received from a few of these amazing partners.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Malaria Campaign

Dear Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church,

Thank you for your gift to ELCA Malaria Campaign. Your faithful generosity makes a life-saving difference. Your gift is greatly appreciated.

In 13 African nations, gifts like yours make it possible for malaria education programs to teach neighbors how to recognize and prevent malaria, and to seek diagnosis and treatment if the symptoms appear. In Zimbabwe, one man tells how his pastor brings the malaria educators to speak to the congregation regularly, and "everybody now knows the symptoms of malaria" and will go to the village health worker right away if symptoms appear. "It's much better now," he says, over and over again. Your support helped make it possible.

To neighbors yearning to be free of this preventable and treatable disease, gifts like yours bring not only help but also hope. Thank you. Your gift brings us another step closer to making malaria history.

As the ELCA, we do more together than any one of us could ever do alone. We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world - together. Thank you for your support.

Congratulations to our
New Stephen Ministers

Renee Lambert, Marlene Filsinger and Judy Vanderbok have just finished 50 hours of training. They were commissioned on Sunday.

The Stephen Minister training classes provided them with the knowledge and skills to offer high-quality, one-on-one Christian care to people in our community suffering from grief, loss and other difficulties. If you or someone you know would like their caring services, please contact one of our Stephen Minister Leaders.

Congrats also to our newest Stephen Minister Leader, Chip Lee.

How to Give the Same Gift Twice

If you are torn between leaving a gift to your children and leaving a gift to the church upon death, here is a strategy that might be for you. Using a special trust called a testamentary trust or "give it twice trust," you can benefit both your children and your desire to leave a legacy gift for the church. While you might want to give a major portion of your estate outright to children, the rest of your estate can be put in a "give it twice" trust.

The trust will pay an income to your children for a certain period of years chosen by you, perhaps ten or twenty years. At the end of the term of years, the principal from the trust is then given to the church. It's both a wonderful way to show your love for your children and at the same time, witness to them your love of God and your church.

If you are interested in learning more about a "give it twice" trust, contact our congregation's gift planner, Greg Shepherd or call him at 909.910.6823.
