NextHome - A connected home for a connected world
Today, we are living in a connected world that provides us with many benefits. We can access and customize information to suit our needs and preferences, and make real time decisions. This "connectivity" continues to grow far beyond how and when we keep in touch with family and friends. What if you could control all of your home appliances and devices from a central dashboard on your smart phone? Or turn your electric vehicle into a generator during power outages to provide electricity to your home?
Now consider that virtually all of the technology that allows us to stay connected is powered via direct current (DC) power. This includes our consumer electronics, appliances, heating and cooling systems, and with the rapid adoption of light emitting diodes (LEDs), our lights. Basically, anything that has a semiconductor runs on DC power.
So what's the big deal? The problem is that electricity moves throughout our homes and buildings in alternating current (AC). When AC is converted to DC to power all those individual devices, the end result is wasted energy (and dollars).
