Focus: Epiphany
Three Kings, a Baby and the Light of the World.

Three Kings
January 6 is the start of the season of Epiphany.  The word "epiphany" means manifestation in Greek and for the Christians it is a time when we celebrate the manifestation of God in our world through Jesus.   The actual celebration day of January 6 marks the visit of the Wise Men from the East to see the young Jesus.  While we in the United States are slowly coming to appreciate this special time, Latin America has a long tradition of celebrating Dia de Los Reyes (Day of the Kings) where kids get gifts from the Magi.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has several resources available to help you and your congregation celebrate the coming of the Light of the World.  Click here to download these resources.

Our partners in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America also have resources that can be of benefit.  Please download them here.

Kristine Holmgren's God Girl to Play @ History Theater January 7

Kristine Holmgren spent the last three decades in service to the church as a Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA).  After retiring from active ministry a few years ago, Holmgren launched into her next vocation, that of a playwright.

Coming on the heels of "Paper Daddy," which was staged earlier this year, comes "God Girl," a play about a the journey of a young female seminarian named Kris Holmgren as she navigates her way through Princeton Seminary in the 1970s.

The autobiographical drama is inspired by Holmgren's first career as a Presbyterian pastor, and her early years as a seminarian. Holmgren entered PTS in 1975 and was ordained a Presbyterian pastor in 1979.

Holmgren notes reliving her history as a young, female seminarian wasn't easy. "This hasn't been an easy journey for me," Holmgren admits. "When the History Theatre first approached me to write this play, I knew it wouldn't be easy to take a stroll down the the memory lane of religious sexism and church corruption."

Holmgren cites research on her generation of clergy women noting because of discouragement, inequality in compensation and direct harassment a majority of them no longer serve the church in a professional manner. She hopes God Girl reminds her audiences of their sacrifices. "We didn't all survive. But my play tells the story of a few brave, crazy women who wouldn't quit - who worked to make other women free," she says. "That's a victory in itself."

The play will have a one-night performance at the Minnesota History Theatre's Raw Stages on January 7 at 7PM.

PTCA Clergy can go to see the play for a discount; $8 tickets will be sold at the door.  Please say you are part of "Kristine's Clergy."

For tickets - contact: Minnesota History Theatre
Prices: $10 ($8 for clergy)
Dates: January 7 at 7PM
