Boo's daughters and niece celebrate the end of summer
|
Usually I secretly look forward to the end of summer. Not because I don't love the season {I do}, but because our school-year routine helps me stay organized. This year however, I am torn about the departure of summertime. While a big part of me wishes I could stop the sun from setting on the season that brings us late nights and later mornings, warm breezes and old friends we seldom see, I do anticipate a great year. A new school year means a fresh start and a lot of exciting changes for kids and parents alike. What could be more fun?
As we begin the transition together from planning summer camp and staycations to organizing homework and after-school activities, I hope this Back-to-School Special Edition makes the shift easy, fun and smooth. Enjoy this exclusive resource, put together just for you!
Happy JABBING!
-Boo

Stains are Such a Pain! From Team JAB JABBERS, we asked you for your best tips on getting stubborn stains, smells and soot out of your child's clothes and school supplies. Here are a few of your trusted secrets: Totally Awesome! Wendy Johnson says, "I use Awesome, which can be used for almost anything. It's sold at the dollar store - look for it on the shelves with the cleaning products. It is truly Awesome. I was in the store one day and overheard a group of firemen talking about how good it was. I had to turn around an agree with them! I always pick up a few bottles to keep around the house." In Cold Blood Kathleen Kauffman says, "When they get a bloody nose and it gets all over their shirt, blood comes right out with hydrogen peroxide. Don't use water first - just go straight for the peroxide!" Bleach It Lissa Dorsey says, "Bleach and a toothbrush gets just about any stain out of white uniforms. My sons have white PE uniforms and it always works on stubborn grass stains." Pen to Paper Gaby Sosa says, "Hairspray takes ballpoint pen marks out. Just spray the stain and wash in cold water. It may need a few washings so just check before you throw it in the dryer." Wake Up and Smell the Shoes Ali Bird says, "For stinky shoes, sprinkle baking soda in them for 24 hours. It does the trick!" On the Mark Rachael Hodyno says, "I use toothpaste to get marker off when my kids color all over themselves. Just put it on and let it sit for a minute and the marker rubs right off."

By ages six and seven, your child should learn to read but by eight, they should read to learn. Reading comprehension difficulties are sometimes the sign of a learning disability. Parents can help. While reading a story, ask your child to predict what will happen next and interpret figures of speech. If reading problems persist, an evaluation by an experienced child psychologist can help determine what the problem is. Call Dr. Mendoza for more information at 305.262.0806 or click HERE to visit our website.*

A Stress-Free School Year
From Team JAB
We went to acclaimed organizational guru Barbara Reich for some tips on how parents can start the school year out right. Take a look at her ideas for a stress-free year.
1. Don't be afraid to say no ... to heading the benefit committee, to play dates your child doesn't want, and to activities that are inconvenient for you.
2. Do volunteer ... for something fun and easy. By volunteering to plan the parents' night out, you can ensure that its location and date work for you. By volunteering to plan the 6th grade graduation party, you can win points with your child without suffering through a year-long commitment.
3. Start your schedule by locking in the activity your kid likes most. Once you know when that meets, you can branch out from there.
4. Back up all homework on an external hard drive or flash drive. Saving these files externally will protect documents from being accidentally deleted by other family members.
5. Be careful not to over-schedule your kids, but many suggest that i-chatting is not a better option. Playing outside or reading a non-required book is a great way for kids to unwind!
6. Take a deep breath or have a glass of wine. Staying calm is as essential during this time as pencil cases and notebooks.

Don't Lose It!
From Team JAB
You know your child went to school with two shoes on. So where's the other shoe? Or what about the lunchbox and pencil case? Here are a few tips to keep your child organized - and to keep you from losing it over a long list of missing items!
Keep a Calendar
Know what your child needs to bring to school every day by keeping a calendar and chart. Before school, remind your child what they have with them and why they need it.
Minimalist Approach
Only have your child take the minimum. If their backpack is stuffed to the gills with things they don't need, something is bound to get lost.
Start a Routine
Ask your child every day if they have everything they brought with them. The routine question is a subtle way of reinforcing the importance of bringing things home.
Get Organized
Once you buy all the cases, bags and folders needed for school, teach your child how to use them. Show them what it looks like to be organized. They might not fully understand what everything is for.
Label It
Invest in a label maker and put your child's name on everything! That way when you make the dreaded call to school asking if they've found your child's notebook, it's easier to find.
So Rewarding
If your child has gone a while without losing anything, reward them!
Have Backups
In an ideal world, nothing would go missing. But, be realistic and have backups of things your child needs often.
