Remembering Bella | December 12, 2002 - May 28, 2013
Many of us have felt deeply connected to Bella Rodriguez-Torres, a 10-year-old Miami girl who bravely fought an aggressive form of cancer called rhabdomyocarcoma most of her life. We have been touched by her courage and by her family's strength and spirituality over the last six years. Although Bella's time here has come to an end, she will continue to inspire people everywhere to LIVE LIKE BELLA.

Talking to Children About Death
Just as we have shared stories of hope and prayer with our own children, we must now provide them with the tools they need to say good-bye to Bella and help them mourn. We sought the guidance of Mindy Cassel of the Children's Bereavement Center for advice on talking to children about death.

Guidelines for Parents to Talk to Children About Death and Crisis:

1. Begin with you. Before talking to your child, spend the time to talk with other adults, gain information, and most significantly, understand your own feelings. We need to first take care of ourselves in order to be able better to assist our children.

2. Talk about it simply. Address your children with age-appropriate information. Be simple and clear and allow time for your child to respond and ask questions before giving additional information. Simply starting with: "Something very bad has happened..." helps children comprehend and know that it is okay to share difficult information.

3. Asking a very simple question: "What do you think happened?" opens the door to what your child is thinking. It also allows adults to become more aware of what a child may have learned from peers or just listening to adult conversation. This will enable you to address their concerns directly.

4. Listen to your child. It will give you the insight to clear up misinformation, discover their fears and help you provide information at your child's developmental level.

5. Answer their questions with what you believe to be true, and when questions are unanswerable, it is really alright to say that we don't know all the answers. When "why" questions arise, it is an opportunity for the child to discuss what they may think and for adults to share what they may believe. To provide comfort, we may focus on that which we do know and can control. For some questions, we may seek answers from other sources or experts, setting an example for how this may be done (i.e., look up information together or talk to your doctor for medical information).

6. For some children, tragedy may create anxiety, fears or confusion. Be patient; remember that you don't have to address all their concerns at once; this will likely be an ongoing conversation, and questions may arise as they process this information in the coming days and weeks. Children will generally adjust to this information within a few weeks, however, if they are unable to return to their routines or have ongoing difficulty such as nightmares, anxiety or behavioral issues beyond this time, it may be helpful to consult a professional.
