Here Comes the Sun
From Team JAB
Summertime is synonymous with relaxation but protecting ourselves and our kids from the scorching South Florida sun can be stressful. The ever-changing FDA guidelines and the myriad of available sunscreen options can make anyone feel overwhelmed. If you're hoping to find that elusive waterproof sunblock with SPF 100+, don't waste valuable shopping time. The new highest available SPF will be 50+ and sun care products are now all about the labels; there's no such thing as "sunblock," only "sunscreen" and, unless you are wearing a wetsuit, "waterproof" is now "water-resistant. We asked renowned Miami-based dermatologists, Dr. Joely Kaufman and Dr. Alysa Herman to help us navigate the process (and the sunscreen aisle).
Tips on Picking and Applying Sunscreen:
1. The right amount of sunscreen per application is approximately 1 teaspoon for the face and 2-3 teaspoons for the body.
2. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a minimum of SPF 30.
3. Sprays are convenient for the body (and even your hairline), but the alcohol content makes them too drying for the face.
4. Sunscreen alone will not provide sufficient protection. Use hats, sunglasses and apparel with UPF (a rating system for clothing used to show how effectively it shields against UV rays) to further protect yourself and your kids during days spent outdoors.
5. Look for sunscreen without parabens, a potentially harmful ingredient.
Product Suggestions:
Although many women use moisturizers and foundations that contain some sun protection, it is typically not enough to adequately protect the skin. It is recommended that women add a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 to their moisturizers and foundation.
For adult faces:
1. Tizo SPF 40
2. MD Solar Sciences Tinted
3. Cotz Face SPF 40
4. La Roche Posay Anthelios XL
For adult bodies:
1. Minus Sol
2. Skinceutical Sport UV Defense SPF 50 (oxybenzone-free)
3. Target Up & Up Sport spray
4. Aveeno spray
5. Neutrogena spray
For children:
1. Mustela SPF 50+ lotion
2. Aveeno Baby Natural Protection 50+
3. Badger SPF 30 sunscreen
4. Coppertone Sensitive Skin Faces 50+
5. Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby Faces
For infants:
1. Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby Faces (great for kids too)
2. Aubrey Organics Natural Sun
For nose and cheek touch ups:
1. Neutrogena Pure and Free sunscreen stick
2. MD Solar Sciences stick
For camp:
1. Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby Faces (water resistant)
Thank you, Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Herman for making sure we're "covered."

Swensen's, Coral Gables Lou Sabia says, "Nothing beats the good old fashioned taste of Swensen's ice cream!" Whip 'N Dip, Coral Gables Carla Granda says, "The soft serve also has innovative flavor combinations and the best homemade hot fudge. It so nice to see people of all ages gather there after school and on weekends. It's a Miami hang out." JABBER Nicole Murray feels the same way! Azucar, Miami Emilie Wernick says, "This place is the best! They make fresh ice cream daily and the menu changes all the time, but one thing remains the same: delicious ice cream with a Cuban flair with flavors like flan, passion fruit and café con leche. Heaven! Plus, the shop's décor is really cute." Pinkberry, Miami Juanita Diaz says, "Frozen yogurt ... gourmet, healthy delicious: Pinkberry!" Walls Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Miami Scott Krupie says, "Delicious, generous portions and a friendly staff." Tongue & Cheek, Miami Beach Aubrey Swanson says, "Tongue & Cheek has amazing desserts and their Cracker Jack milkshake is absurdly delicious. They also have liquid nitrogen ice cream."
