Dear JABBERS: Many of us have been deeply affected this week by the news that 10-year-old Bella Rodriguez-Torres (see attached photo or click HERE to see a few more, who has been battling Rhabdomyosarcoma (a very aggressive form of cancer) has been brought home from Miami Children's Hospital to live out her short life on hospice care. Since Bella was diagnosed six years ago, she and her family have made a profound impact on this community and even around the world. They have brought us to our knees with their strength and eloquence, even while enduring unthinkable pain. They have made us laugh and cry out loud by sharing stories on Facebook and CaringBridge.com about Bella, her younger sister Rayna (who is hilarious), their friends, their pets, their life, and their incredible journey. They have inspired countless people, regardless of their faith, to pray for Bella. They have opened their hearts to all those who support them, thereby helping many of us open our own hearts in a way we didn't know we could. They have raised significant awareness about childhood cancer and the need for funding and research (see www.curesearch.org). Bella and her family have changed our lives forever.
For those of you who have not kept up with Bella, I am pleased to share with you that the Rodriguez-Torres family is doing quite well. In fact, Bella's father Raymond said just the other day, "Our house has been full of love and life and she is so happy to be home with her doggies, family and friends."
On Thursday, Paul and I broke the news to our two daughters (ages nine and seven) that their friend Bella will soon be going to heaven. To our surprise, they understood this as well as any of us can as adults, and as a result they took the news pretty hard. I assured them that while we would miss Bella, she would not miss us because she will be watching over us from heaven - when she's not busy sliding down rainbows and riding unicorns. Their questions are endless and I'm doing my best to respond, despite not having the answers. In the coming days, we will offer you some information from a child bereavement expert on how to explain this difficult subject to young children.
How You Can Help
Many of you are asking how you can help. So we asked Bella's family on your behalf. There are two ways you can help the Rodriguez-Torres family: One, you can purchase gift cards to Whole Foods, Publix, Norman Brothers, or PetSmart (as you know, Bella has a quite a menagerie!). These cards can be mailed to JAB and we will deliver them to Bella's family. (Please mail them to JustAskBoo, LLC | For the R-T Family | 1825 Ponce de Leon Blvd., No. 153 | Coral Gables, FL 33134. If you do choose this option, please provide an email address in the envelope so that we can confirm receipt.) Two, we have opened an account for the family at Joanna's Marketplace. Simply call Joanna's at 305.661.5777, indicate the amount you would like to contribute and your credit card info, and they will take care of the rest. This way, the family can order meals and groceries for pick-up or delivery.
Vigil for Bella
JABBERS, please join us for a candlelight vigil for Bella tonight (Monday, May 13) at Peacock Park in Coconut Grove at 6:30 pm. This vigil will be led by Pastor Bill White of Christ Journey Church (formerly UBC). Please wear red (Bella's favorite color) and bring your own candles and refreshments as needed. Adults and children are welcome. Find more information on JAB's Facebook page. We hope to see you tonight. In the meantime, please keep the Rodriguez-Torres family in your thoughts and remember to Live Like Bella!
