In the Mainstream
From Michele Drucker: REPLY Three years ago, I asked for your experiences with the McGlannan School. I received so many thoughtful and heartfelt responses - I can't thank you enough for your personal input. Our son, who is dyslexic, has now been at McGlannan for three years, but was just offered a spot in the art program at South Miami Middle School. He is a bright child with accelerated math skills and on-level reading skills. His spelling and expressive writing is still weak. We know that it's now or never for this magnet middle school and are struggling with whether or not to make the move. I would be grateful for your mainstreaming stories - was it too soon, did you try public school, were you more ready than you thought? Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Think Twice
From Cristina Salas: REPLY My daughter was recently diagnosed as twice exceptional. She is gifted with a learning disability (ADD) and her IQ results fall in the .05% of her peers in that she tested superior for VCI and PRI, but average in WMI and PSI. As she heads into middle school, I want to do what's best for her. Her psychologist says she should be in a gifted program, but I have reservations and would really love to hear from parents in similar situations. I don't really know how to handle this! I am also looking at putting her in a summer program to help with her study and organizational skills. Is there a program you recommend? Thank you! |
