Dear JABBERS: Welcome to the holidays in South Florida! As we pull together this month's Holiday Break Happenings Special Edition, we find that some of our readers simply can't wait for the schools to shut down for the holidays so they can fill their homes with little voices for three straight weeks. Others are panicking over the idea of trying to entertain their children (not to mention out of town guests) ... for two straight weeks.

Well, JABBERS, we've come to your rescue - again! Think of this Special Edition as  the essential (yet often elusive) gift of time.  We hope this indispensable resource serves as a way to help keep your children entertained and happy through the season so that you can make your list, check it twice, and most importantly, stay merry!

Happy Holidays and Happy JABBING!

-Boo

Batteries Included

From Team JABBatteries

There is nothing like seeing the joy on your child's face when they open up their special holiday gifts. While our kids spend countless hours during the holiday break playing with the toys they received, please be reminded that many of these toys contain small batteries that can be very dangerous if ingested. Button-cell batteries (small, silver discs) can cause a fatal injury when in the esophagus for as little as two hours. Dr. David Brumbaugh, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Digestive Health Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado and a former Miami resident, says parents should seek medical attention immediately if a child swallows a button battery. He also offers the below precautionary measures to keep batteries out of your little one's reach. Stay safe, JABBERS!

  • Only buy electronics with battery compartments secured by screws and periodically check to make sure the screws are tight.
  • Replace household items that have a loose battery compartment.
  • Store backup batteries in a place out of sight and reach of your child.
  • Do not leave old batteries lying around.

A Sweet Tooth for Sugar Cookies

From Emilie Goldman Wernick, JAB Miami South Editor Cookies

Don't let the South Florida humidity get your sugar cookies down! My Grandma Jane's famous sugar cookie recipe is easy and delicious - perfect for holiday baking. Enjoy!

Tips: Roll out dough in two portions, keeping one chilled. Work quickly and use powdered sugar (not flour) on the work surface to prevent sticking.

Ingredients

1 cups all purpose flour (preferably King Arthur brand)

 tsp baking powder

 tsp table salt

1 stick unsalted butter, softened

1/3 cup granulated sugar

 cup sifted powdered sugar

Minced zest of one lemon

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

 tsp cream of tartar (optional)

Directions

Whisk flour, baking powder and salt together, set aside. Cream butter, both sugars and zest with your mixer. Blend egg, vanilla and cream into butter mixture. Add half the dry ingredients, mix, then add remaining dry ingredients. Shape dough into a disc, wrap in plastic and chill at least two hours before rolling out. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut the chilled dough in half and return one half to refrigerator. Roll out other half on a well powdered (with powdered sugar) work surface and cut into desired shapes. Transfer cookies to baking sheets and bake 10-12 minutes, or until cookies have lightly golden edges. Let cool for five minutes, then decorate! Makes two dozen three inch cookies. (Note: dough can be frozen up to a month).

Happy JABBING
