JAB Spotlight: Sabrina Cohen Dear JABBERS: Sometimes, ordinary people can overcome enormous challenges to do extraordinary things. This December, our spotlight shines bright on Sabrina Cohen, a motivational speaker and stem cell research advocate who is using her experience to change lives. JAB Founder Boo Zamek and Miami South Editor Emilie Wernick had the privilege of meeting Sabrina when she spoke at the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce Women's Business Networking lunch event (see photo) recently.
At the age of 14, Sabrina was in a horrific, life-altering car accident in Miami Beach that severely injured her spinal cord and left her confined to a wheelchair, unable to render use of her legs and arms. Determined not to let her circumstances get the best of her, Sabrina turned her injury into a way to help others. She frequently inspires people of all ages, serving as an impassioned speaker at local, national and international events with her awe-inspiring message about safe driving. Sabrina's efforts don't stop there. She has also become one of the country's leading stem cell research advocates. She is on the Advisory Board of the Genetics Policy institute, a leading nonprofit dedicated to establishing a legal framework to advance stem cell research, and she travels nationwide to attend conferences addressing the science. And in 2006, she established the Sabrina Cohen Foundation for Stem Cell Research to educate the public about the cause and raise funds for research. As the Foundation's spokesperson, she has been featured on NBC, FOX, CBS, CNN Headline News, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Miami Herald, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, and many other media outlets discussing her cause. She was also recently named a 2012 "Women Doing Good" honoree by SELF magazine. Through her Foundation and work with other top research organizations, Sabrina hopes to find a way to reverse paralysis and effectively treat other impairments of the Central Nervous System. Thank you, Sabrina, for turning your experience into an opportunity to inspire and make a difference in the lives of so many others - not only in our community, but around the world. Happy JABBING!
