Dear JABBERS: It's that time of year again! If you think Santa has Christmas spirit, you have not met my husband Paul. Right now he is hard at work, planning the 2012 Zamek Christmas Extravaganza - his favorite day of the year. Most people shop on Black Friday. Not the Zameks. We work - but happily, like little elves. Paul rises at dawn and yanks the kids out of bed insisting they be the first to arrive at Publix when it opens, in time to claim the best Christmas tree in the parking lot. Fantasizing about the scene in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation where Clark W. Griswold drags his family into the forest to choose a tree, Paul proudly straps the "Zamek Family Christmas Tree" to the top of his car and gets to work. By 2 pm, the tree is trimmed, the house is decorated, the Christmas carols are at full volume, and even my car is adorned with Rudolph horns and a red nose. The extended family comes over sharply at 5 pm for "Christmas lasagna" and no matter what time they leave, I am required to watch the movie (you know the one ... Christmas Vacation!) until the bitter end. It is truly a tradition none of us would trade, and one we look forward to 364 days a year.
Traditions are what I love most about the holidays. Whatever you and your family enjoy doing together each year, I hope it's fun, memorable, and filled with warmth and laughter.
Happy holidays, JABBERS.
-Boo Zamek

JABBERS' Picks: Hostess/Host Gifts!
From Team JAB
'Tis the season for holiday parties! We asked JABBERS what they like to bring hosts/hostesses as a thank you. Here are a few of your great ideas:
Wine Down
Denie Harris says, "I love to bring a bottle of the hostess's favorite wine. It's always appreciated!"
Make it Personal
Amanda Ross says, "Whatever I give, I try to personalize it with a special gift tag, or something I know the hostess/host would use. Wine or dessert is always a safe bet, and you can create a personalized gift basket that your host might enjoy or try something different, like stationery or holiday linens."
Flatter with a Platter Gaby Sosa says, "I like to bring a cute cheese or serving platter that complements the hostesses' aesthetic."
Get Cooking!
Ann Roberts says, "My favorite thing to give is a unique cookbook that I know the hostess would enjoy. If the person just came back from Tuscany, then I try to find a delicious cookbook with Italian recipes or if they like going to the Keys, maybe a book with island-type recipes."
Scent in Time Rosemary Hartigan says, "A pretty candle is a great thank you to the host/hostess for opening their home." Kitchen Confidential
Andrea Reynolds says, "I like to make wrapping part of the gift. Use a stylish, modern tea towel and grosgrain ribbon to wrap a set of serving pieces, a silver tea canister with gourmet tea or a bottle of wine. Monogrammed cocktail napkins are also a great idea. You can never have enough of any of these gifts!"
Take a Dip Mary Eaton says, "I give very fine olive oil harvested by women in Palestine that I get at a fair trade shop. It's a great alternative to wine since it's so unique." |

Spice Up Your Cup of Joe!
From Team JAB
As the weather gets colder (well, for Miami standards), many of us start to crave a warm cup of spiced coffee to fend the chill away. Instead of running out to your favorite coffee spot, try making it at home! It's as easy as can be with just a few basic spices.
Ingredients
Your favorite fresh-ground coffee beans 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
Directions
1. Get your coffee maker all set up as usual (filled with distilled, cold water and loaded with your ground beans to desired strength).
2. Add the spices to the grounds compartment, concentrated where the water comes out (typically the middle).
3. Brew coffee.
4. Add cream, sugar, sugar substitute, etc.
5. Enjoy!
