Boo and family in 2011 as characters from popular cartoon Phineas and Ferb
|
DEAR JABBERS: As many of you know, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! By now, we are usually knee-deep in candy corns, recovering from a raucous adults-only bash from the weekend, while feverishly trying to pull together some clever costumes for the family to unveil at the neighborhood party. Halloween is the perfect opportunity to re-invent yourself for the night (or two, or three, depending on how busy your social schedule is) - a temporary, pre-approved escape from reality (and your dietary restrictions).
This year, while we gather with friends to trick-or-treat in this perfect South Florida weather, I can't help but think of our friends, family and loved ones around the country who are in the path of Sandy - aptly nicknamed Frankenstorm.
I wish you and your families, whether they're here or afar, a very happy and safe Halloween.
Happy Halloween ... and Happy JABBING!
-Boo

Is Your Child Overwhelmed and Stressed Out About School?
From Christina Nobbe: REPLY Fire the therapist and tutors and call me! Once enrolled in NVA, your child will no longer need them. Our students in grades 2-12 move at their own pace, studying customized academic programs and receiving lots of one-on-one attention in classrooms of no more than 6-7 students per teacher. We operate as a remote classroom for a licensed, private and accredited school and strive to not only to meet but exceed Fla. Sunshine Standards. We provide a full day of schooling, but also help homeschoolers with advice, programming and curriculum! For info, click HERE or call Christina at (305) 321.0031.* |

Lions and Tigers and Bears ... Oh My!
| JAB's Boo Zamek, Zaria Walter and Katie Butler at the Beaux Arts Ball |
A special thanks to all who attended and supported the Beaux Arts ball on October 27. This year, Miami's oldest costume Ball was themed "The Emerald City" and attracted 225 revelers at the Four Seasons to raise funds for UM's Lowe Art Museum and help introduce underprivileged children to the world of art. The elaborately decorated ballroom ensured guests were "not in Kansas anymore." Costumes included Dorothys, tin women, lions, scarecrows, Lollipop Brigade, witches and wizards. Not to mention a yellow brick road, Fifty Shades of Green, prisoners from the TV series OZ, and Dunkin Donuts employees giving out Munchkins. Beaux Arts thanks all guests, sponsors and donors for your support!*

Halloween Costume Safety Tips
From Team JAB
Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):
- Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.
- Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bags for greater visibility.
- Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives.
- Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes.
- When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
- If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories, if he stumbles or trips.
- Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.
- Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional.
- While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as "one size fits all," or "no need to see an eye specialist," obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss.
- Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost.
