August's Awesome
Torah and Hike(s)

Did you know that the average American spends 93% of their time
indoors?  "According to a study published last July in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a 90-minute walk through a natural environment had a huge positive impact on participants."  For more information on why hiking is good for the brain and soul,

The Reno Gazette Journal hosts Faith Forum on Sundays.  A question is answered by clergy from many faiths.  Rabbi Beyer provides the Jewish response.

RGJ asked:  Why is there decreased mortality risk for those who attend religious services, according to social science?

G-d Blesses

In Temple times, people who came to the Temple were literally blessed by G-d through the priests. (Number 6:23-27). Our Sages liken those 60 Hebrew letters of the Priestly Blessing to the 60 armed guards of King Solomon. (Song of Songs 3:7-8). Certainly it's tempting to speculate that G-d blesses those who attend religious services.

From a modern Jewish perspective, longevity may be related to socio-economic status, health-conscious behaviors and higher education levels among Jewish populations. Such findings are likely a combination of factors which include bonding with a community of family and friends and developing positive emotional attitudes (faith, love, forgiveness, optimism, peace, etc.). While these behaviors are not present in all who attend synagogue services, the message in religious environments tends to prioritize positive behaviors and put painful experiences in proper perspective. Sending, receiving and being a blessing are, G-d willing, keys to a long life: physical, emotional and spiritual.

Faith Forum appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2016 it was 5 YEARS for Faith Forum column to run in the RGJ.  This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns. Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d.  Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (enthusiasm) and the food is sweet.  Beth Or is affiliated with the Jewish Community of Elko County.
