Jonah. A Prophet. In Blue Jeans.

CALL FOR AUDITIONS
Singers, Actors and more needed

Auditions for a world premiere musical based on the ancient story of Jonah will be held on July 19 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 501 California Avenue.  "Jonah. A Prophet.  In Blue Jeans." is a new musical set in contemporary times in Reno.  We are looking for men and women for 12 solo singing roles, another 6 speaking roles, and as many others as want to be on stage in singing and acting extra roles.  We also need skilled videographers, computer operators, sound people, and other backstage folks.  For additional information regarding the musical, the auditions, or your other opportunities to be involved, please e-mail louisling@me.com.

Jonah's is a treasured tale.  Our musical undertakes an adult, thoughtful exploration of the deep themes of faithfulness, trust, and divine lovingkindness in The telling of Jonah's story.    All set to great, original music.  We are hopeful to showcase Reno's creative people of all faiths working together to originate a new and fresh musical that the world has literally never seen before.  Welcome, welcome, welcome all.

The Reno Gazette Journal hosts Faith Forum on Sundays.  A question is answered by clergy from many faiths.  Rabbi Beyer provides the Jewish response.

RGJ asked:  Does Religion Make Us Happier?

Perks

The "benefits package" for observing a religious life includes happiness. We develop relationships with those who are interested in experiencing G-d through a Jewish path.   Judaism is practiced in community. "There is no happiness in the world of material things; there is only happiness in spiritual concerns. The one who enjoys a rich spiritual life is happy. There is no other kind of happiness in existence." (Michtav meh-Eliyahu).

It's not the "religion" per se that makes us happier, rather it's the spiritual work. In fact, it's specifically related to growth. The Hebrew word sameakh (happy) is related to the word tzomeakh (growth). (Hirsch). Rabbi Twerski says life without spiritual growth is life without joy. True happiness can come only from spiritual growth. That means that we cannot rest on the level
where we've been, but must continue to polish our souls each day through experiences and spiritual study.

Faith Forum appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2016 it was 5 YEARS for Faith Forum column to run in the RGJ.  This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns. Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d.  Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (enthusiasm) and the food is sweet.  Beth Or is affiliated with the Jewish Community of Elko County. Rabbi Beyer also works with North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation, Tahoe Vista, Lake Tahoe.
