The Reno Gazette Journal hosts Faith Forum on Sundays.  A question is answered by clergy from many faiths.  Rabbi Beyer provides the Jewish response.

RGJ asked:  Is organized religion good or bad?

Rabbi Beyer says,

Friends Along the Way

Overall organized religion is simply designed to put one on a path to G-d.  Judaism is not a system with mandatory beliefs about G-d.  Rather, one is encouraged to explore their relationship to the "Great Mystery."  It is a life-embracing compass with practices which include prayer (communication with G-d), rituals (methods to tap into the subconscious) and ways to interact with G-d and with humans (kindness, justice, forgiveness and a way to spiritual evolve).

Organized religion, at its optimal, is a group whose mission is to experience G-d.  Without the trail of breadcrumbs left by Sages, it would be nearly impossible to chart a direct course to G-d.  Thus, our Sages instituted a law saying "Do not separate yourself from the group." (Pirkey Avot 2:5).  They also note that G-d always hears the prayers of the community.   (Yad HaChazaka, Laws of Prayer 8:1).  We are better together working as a team.

Faith Forum appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2015 it is 4 YEARS for Faith Forum column in the RGJ.  This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns. Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d.  Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (passion) and the food is sweet.  Beth Or is affiliated with the Jewish Community of Elko County. Rabbi Beyer also works with North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation, Tahoe Vista, Lake Tahoe.
