The Reno Gazette Journal posts Faith Forum on Sundays.  A question is answered by clergy from many faiths.  Rabbi Beyer provides the Jewish response.

RGJ asked:
Since most beliefs point to one G-d, why do we have so many religions and denominations?

Rabbi Beyer says,

Learn From Each Other

Each religion emphasizes a slightly different aspect of the path toward the Holy One. The Baal Shem Tov says that everyone has their own spiritual journey and their own unique contribution to make in the world. One spiritual path does not fit all.

Today, it's possible to choose the religion that's nearest to your heart - the one that fits you. Judaism does not say it's the only path to G-d. In fact, people are not encouraged to convert to Judaism. For someone interested in converting, they are often encouraged to remain in their own religion and become better at that.

In acknowledging the value of many paths our Sages note, "All the righteous have a share in the World to Come." Talmud. People practice different religions and G-d only knows why there are so many. Perhaps many religions exist because G-d is interested in having us learn from each other.

Faith Forum appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2014 it was 3 YEARS for Faith Forum column in the RGJ.  This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns.
