Shabbat with Rabbi Beyer
@ the Lake
November 14, 21, 28

The Reno Gazette Journal posts Faith Forum on Sundays.  A question is answered by clergy from many faiths.  Rabbi Beyer provides the Jewish response.

RGJ asked:
What Should We Do When Reason and Belief Differ or Contradict Each Other?  Do We Side with
Divine Truth or Scientific Truth?

Rabbi Beyer says,

Two Jews, Three Opinions

Jewish tradition holds that truth is multivalent.  There are many ways to study and view sacred text.  One technique, called PaRDeS (Paradise), examines four levels:  1)  Pshat - the plain text; 2) Remez - textual hints; 3) Drash - moral ethical lessons drawn from the text; and 4) Sod - a secret level.  So, to answer, "Did G-d create heaven and earth in 6 days?"  The plain text says, "yes."  An allegorical level finds this passage descriptive of G-d's work in gradually unfolding and manifesting the Universe.  The moral ethical lesson teaches that G-d thoughtfully created the world with humankind's benefit in mind.  From a secret level, well, that's a secret.

Another example would be the notion of the "Messiah."  Some believe the Messiah will be a king-like ruler ushering in a time of peace.  There are also Sages (Ari, Besht, Luzatto, Rav Kook) who say that Messianic times are an internal spiritual awakening bringing transformative internal peace.  There is more than one way of understanding spiritual truth.

To explore this idea further and to hear an excellent drash, the

Faith Forum appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2014 it was 3 YEARS for Faith Forum column in the RGJ.  This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns. Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d.  Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (passion) and the food is sweet.  Beth Or is affiliated with the Jewish Community of Elko County. Rabbi Beyer also works with North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation, Tahoe Vista, Lake Tahoe.
