The Reno Gazette Journal posts Faith Forum on Sundays.  A question is answered by clergy from many faiths.  Rabbi Beyer provides the Jewish response.

RGJ asked:  Should Religious People Be Vegetarians?

Rabbi Beyer says,

Good Choice

Although there is no religious requirement to be vegetarian, some Sages encouraged a vegetarian diet. Jewish law is concerned with how animals are treated, including the method by which they are killed.  Kosher butchering is designed be the least painless.  Some Sages argue that the many stringent laws about that process were to discourage meat eating.  (Rav Kook). Indeed, some observant Jews choose to eat kosher meat only at a holiday celebration, not daily.

Today, the rationale to be vegetarian is based partly upon the difficulty of finding humanely and ethically raised animals butchered in a kosher manner.  The "Eco-kashrut" movement works to address ethical concerns about food.    Another reason to avoid heavy meat consumption is health.  Maintaining health with a healthy weight is a religious concern.  Finally, avoiding overuse of meat is important to support a sustainable agricultural system for our planet which endeavors to feed a growing population.

Faith Forum appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words. Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2014 it was 3 YEARS for Faith Forum column in the RGJ.  This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns. See www.nevadafaithforum.org
