IMPORTANT Letter from the Treasurer and Board Previously posted in our Nov. Newsletter
Do you want to continue our shul in 5773 / 2013?
|
Dear Temple Beth Or family, I'd like to share comments I've heard from our members and guests.
"Shabbat services are lovely." "The music is joyful." "The Rabbi is inspiring." "I love the food at the Shabbat dinners." "The community here is very friendly." "Everyone is always smiling when they are here." "I love to hear Torah sung."
Wonderful comments and warm feelings are often conveyed. Thank you. I come to you today to tell you that Temple Beth Or is facing financial difficulties, and ask that if any of the above comments ring true for you, please consider making a donation to our shul. Many of you may be aware of the costs associated with running this synagogue, as they've been spoken about before.
You are also all aware of how much we rely on our shul and our Rabbi for those special events, such as birth, bris, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, wedding, funeral, to visit us when we are sick, or maybe just to have coffee with us to talk about something. Temple Beth Or and our Rabbi are and a resource for the Reno community for outreach to unaffiliated Jews, for classes, for interfaith events, etc.
We on the Board have taken a different approach towards dues and donations than other synagogues you may have attended in the past. The "Pay to Pray" approach is harmful and sends people, myself included, away from those places of worship. Our temple is different. I send out dues donation requests in January and June, and leave the choice up to you. Those that can make donations do so of their own accord.
What does this Temple mean to you? Does it mean enough to you to help to sustain it, to help us keep its doors open? We would like to acknowledge those of you who have paid your dues and made extra donations. Thank you so much. We appreciate those who have pledged money to keep TBOR afloat past January. It's up to you now to continue to contribute to this special place worthy of your support.
In the coming weeks I will be calling and speaking to all of you regarding the donations we've received from you, and ask that you consider giving to our community. This is an unpleasant task, but we have a crossroads ahead of us, and I want to fight for this community and this place we call our spiritual home. Please join me and the rest of the Board in supporting our House of Light. Call me if you have any questions.
Warmest regards,
Barbara Ries - Treasurer, Temple Beth Or 775-742-5736

Blessings for Inanimate Objects?
Reno Gazette Journal's FAITH FORUM asks, "Do you think that a piece of machinery will experience the favor of G-d because it has been blessed by 'one of his representatives" on the earth? Can only some 'special' people invoke such divine protection or every devotee carries the power to transmit G-d's blessings in such cases?"
REB's Reponse: Voice Can Create Blessing
According to physics there is a natural frequency or set of frequencies to everything, including inanimate objects, at which they vibrate when struck, plucked, strummed or are somehow disturbed. The actual frequency depends upon the properties of the material. At the risk of sounding too "New-Agey," there are those who would say blessing comes from the voice (which creates a particular frequency) which anyone can use. So, bikes and gas tanks theoretically could receive a blessing as a result of the frequency of saying a blessing.
G-d created the universe through speech. In Jewish tradition, we have specific blessings for many things, such as food, drink, fragrance, mitzvot (ethical commandments), even praise and gratitude. The list goes on - eating seasonal fruits of a new season for the first time, a new garment, seeing a place where one experienced a miracle saving oneself from danger. Blessing begins with heart-felt attention.
Blessings to you and your family, Chag Orim Sameach (Happy Festival of Lights), REB and TBOR Board
Reno Gazette Journal Faith Forum Authors
Faith Forum now appears each Sunday in the Local Life Section of the Reno Gazette Journal. Faith Forum clergy answer a question posed each week and responses in the paper are limited to 150 words.
Rabbi Beyer is featured as the "Jewish" response. In February 2013 it will be two full YEARS for the Faith Forum column in the RGJ! This interfaith group is now working towards a book which would be an edited collection of these columns.

Hillel Revamped....
A new organization named "Hillel of Northern Nevada" also known as "The Northern Nevada Foundation for Jewish Student Life" has been granted non-profit status and has begun operations. The Board of Directors consists of members of Temple Sinai, Temple Emanu El, Temple Beth Or, and Chabad. Board members include university professors, business people, and retirees who seek to serve the cultural and religious needs of college students in Northern Nevada. Our principal shortterm goals are to hire a director, to affiliate with the long-established Hillel Society, and to raise funds with which to provide a cultural center designed to attract students to meet one another for educational, cultural and religious (though non-denominational) activities, including lectures, book groups, and other events. Hillel of Northern Nevada aims to strengthen and enrich the lives of Jewish students in Northern Nevada generally and at the University of Nevada, Reno, in particular. The Foundation seeks to create a "center" for Jewish student life in both the spiritual and physical senses of the word. It envisions empowering students of faith to build community, particularly across class, race, and religious boundaries and to establish a legacy of leadership throughout Northern Nevada. Many thanks and blessings to so many of you who helped make the 17 tallitot for the Prisoners and to Rabbi Meredith Cahn who also donated one. Rabbi Beyer helped put Dr. Lisagor in touch with Rabbi Gorin who was able to supply Bibles to the prisoners. If you are interested in working with prisoners, Dr. Lisagor could use your help. Contact REB and she will be happy to get you connected for this mitzvah project.
Hi Rabbi,
I was at Lovelock CC yesterday and the prisoners sent along two thank you cards for the Tallit from your congregation. Every prisoner was able to wear a Talit for the High Holidays this year. Also, they are so appreciate of the Tanaks and the Jewish Encyclopedia that Rabbi Gorin has sent to them.
These little things make a big difference for all of the prisoners, now and into the future. Maybe you could print out the cards and share with your congregation. And of course, I'm always willing to come by your services for a personal thank you and am also always looking for volunteers to help me with this project.

Temple Beth Or is an evolving group dedicated to Jewish values and learning. We support chevruta study (partner or small group study) and "experiencing" G-d. Friday night Shabbat services are musical, filled with ruach (passion) and the food is sweet. We'd love to have you join us. Ongoing partners include the Jewish Community of Elko County. Nevada Hillel (Jewish student group at UNR) has revamped and is now "Hillel of Northern Nevada."
