Another successful year for the Century Cycles Bike To School Challenge
The biggest bike-to-school program in the nation, the Century Cycles Bike To School Challenge, concluded on May 22. Over 5,000 students at eight Northeast Ohio schools took the challenge to ride their bikes to school for fun, fitness, and to help the environment.
In Bay Village, the Bike To School Challenge returned to Bay High School, Bay Middle School, and Westerly Elementary School. In Medina, the BTS Challenge returned to A.I. Root Middle School and Claggett Middle School, and this year we welcomed the addition of H.G. Blake Elementary School! In Rocky River, the BTS Challenge returned to Rocky River Middle School, and for the first time, we welcomed Kensington Elementary School! During the three weeks of the Bike To School Challenge, students at all eight schools set new records and racked up the following impressive statistics:
- Biked a total of 21,193 round-trip rides to school, cycling a total of 84,772 miles (based on an average one-way trip of 2 miles from home to school).
- Saved 84,772 pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere.
- Saved their parents of $9,000 in gasoline costs.
- Burned over 2.2 million calories, the equivalent of over 12,000 cans of Coca-Cola.
The students' cycling also earned them prizes from event sponsors Arby's, Domino's Pizza, Honey Hut Ice Cream Shoppe, Subway, plus chances at the grand prize of bicycles provided by Century Cycles and Raleigh Bicycles!
You can find more photos on the event's web page at: You can also follow the Bike To School Challenge on Facebook and Twitter. The final celebration of the Century Cycles Bike To School Challenge will take place this Friday, May 29 with the "Biver/Ray Ride," where any students from Bay Middle School and Rocky River Middle School who biked to school for every day of the three-week challenge will be treated to an outing in the Cuyahoga Valley. The day will start with a ride on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail with rental bikes provided by Century Cycles in Peninsula, followed by a pizza party at The Winking Lizard next door!
