MEGATRENDS
THAT WILL IMPACT THE PRODUCE INDUSTRY By Andrew Southwood Member of FreshXperts
We all wonder about the future, particularly when we have little children or grandchildren. "What kind of a world will they live in?" As business owners or leaders of organizations, we ask "How do I best position my business or organization to ensure success in the future?"
While there are many authors and bloggers who speculate what the future might hold, a report printed in December 2012 by The National Intelligence Council entitled Global Trends: Alternative Worlds provides a useful framework for us to think about the future.
Taking the four megatrends identified we take a quick look at how each of these is likely to impact the fresh produce industry. As you read the article, we encourage you to think about how each might impact your business or organization.
Empowerment of the individual
The global middle class is growing at a rapid rate, with new consumers in Russia, Brazil, India and China demanding mobile technology, cars and travel services. As a result, ideas spread fast and the ability for ordinary citizens to collaborate to achieve common social goals via social media is breathtaking. The ongoing events in Egypt testify to this. It is easy enough to see how the power of the individual could be used to boycott producers with a poor track record in food safety or unacceptable farm labour practices.
Diffusion of power and influence
The global financial crisis of 2008 has exposed just how ineffective central government and global institutions created in the 20th century have become. As Steve Denning in a recent Forbes on-line article points out, the management pillars of the last century are collapsing. With a loss of confidence in institutions and organizations that can no longer deliver value to their stakeholders, influence and power will shift to networks and coalitions in a multipolar world. How well will those organizations servicing the fresh produce industry hold up given this mega-trend?
The three main drivers at work in North America are a rapidly aging population, increasing Hispanic group and a younger generation of consumers that are very well informed before they decide to buy anything. These shifting demographics will have an ongoing impact on the fresh produce industry in terms of product offering, packaging options, nutritional benefits sought, as well as for marketing and communication strategies.
Key resource constraints
With the global population anticipated to grow to 9 billion people by the year 2030, demand for water, land, food and energy will grow substantially. Knowing how interconnected these resources are will vary by geographic region. California stands out as one of these regions where over the next decade an increasing number of conflicts will emerge as competition for these resources rise. No area will be immune to these forces.
Fortunately for those who plan ahead and include the inputs provided by such organizations as the National Intelligence Council in their own strategic plans for the future, such companies/organizations will be well positioned to cope and prosper in a world that is becoming less and less certain.
FreshXperts can help you position yourself for success in the brave new world which is unfolding around us right now. Feel free to give us a call to see how we can help you put in place the right strategy for your organization to thrive and survive!

WHAT WE DO
Anthony Totta
Grow My Profits, LLC

Many recall the late Peter J. Taggares's agricultural potato & grape empire in Washington State. Pete's name and half a billion dollar fortune were the result of a well-executed brand "story". The farm's legacy is attributed to signature uniqueness and scrupulous commitment to build a memorable brand image. In fact, Taggares was so committed to his image, every farm telephone poll for miles & every tractor was painted bright white, not to mention the corporate jet, yacht, cars, and trucks.
In today's dynamic fast-paced technology driven world, it takes much more than white paint cans to set your organization apart. It is essential to develop a strategy which draws attention from new prospects while remaining relevant to existing customers.
Grow My Profits guides grower-shippers and retailers through this process to turn day to day operations into living, breathing, stories, brands, and legacies in the minds of their customers.
What We Do:
- Brand & Story Development: A great joke told the wrong way prompts few laughs. If laughs were money, telling your story well in today's "tough audience" is critical. Grow My Profits guides companies through a methodical process of uncovering your uniqueness and develops innovate ways to communicate company a story that embodies your history, culture, quality, family and or people.
- Promotion:
Grow My Profits develops one-of-a-kind tangible ways to connect your retail & wholesale customers with your brand using tradeshow & partner promotional items, custom chef-developed recipes, high-impact marketing collateral, and compelling video presentations. Make your sales & merchandising support programs difficult to emulate by engaging Grow My Profits. Learn more about video production services below:
- Business Development: Grow My Profits leverages over 30 years of experience to grow visibility of your operation, while engaging in strategic plans to improve your sales and marketing processes. Learn how to better manage client & prospect communication and improve efficiencies while removing hurdles in your sales process. The end results for our dedicated clients: Record Sales.
While many grower-shippers are aware of new mediums to connect with customers, very few have capacity, experience, resources, or focused brand/marketing/sales plans to realize return on their investments. As mounting regulatory, economic, and marketing pressures increase, building brand awareness is more important than ever. We recommend an introspective self-assessment of your current efforts and a realistic consideration of the results.
