President's Message
by Angie Ramey, President
Hi, Everyone!
November has arrived! I'm glad to bid adieu to mowing season and sweltering temperatures in the studio, and looking very forward to spending a little more time melting glass now that the busy summer season is behind me.
I try really hard to be thankful all year long, and make a sincere effort to let my family and friends know how much I appreciate them every day. But as the Thanksgiving season rolls around, I'd like to publicly express my gratitude to some of the unsung heroes of ISGB. Our Regional Director team has really stepped up their game this year, redoubling their efforts to reach out to every single member of their regions with informative and engaging monthly newsletters, and you'll be seeing articles from several of them in upcoming issues of the Bead Release....a project spearheaded and coordinated by the fabulous Kris Schaible. Lori Greenberg, Stephanie Crider, and a staff of incredibly talented Contributing Editors continue to amaze us all with fresh, varied, and expanding content in our quarterly digital magazine, Glass Bead Evolution. Since becoming Director of Membership this summer, Penny Dickinson has worked tirelessly on adding new, tangible benefits that every single member can take advantage of. And the other members of the board, Deanna Chase, Susan Sheehan, Nikki Haverstock, Jim Kervin, and Lisa Liddy, give untold hours of volunteer time month in and month out working on projects and duties that, while not always glamorous, are vital to the health of our organization. And we are blessed to be supported by the most amazing staff any group could ask for. Kendra Bruno and Sarah Riggle work seamlessly as a team, accomplishing more than I can imagine a staff of six getting done. We are so incredibly fortunate to have them to depend on to keep this engine running.
I'd also like to extend my thanks to every single member who has submitted work for the Encore section of our magazine, posted photos in our Facebook group, worked on committees and special projects, spread the word about ISGB out in the world at large, or even just renewed their membership year after year after year. We're so lucky to be blessed with an abundance of instructors who do outreach on our behalf, and a squad of informal "cheerleaders" who selflessly promote ISGB at every opportunity. (You know who you are, *wink*.) Our organization is, simply put, the sum of our members. And I think that makes us pretty darn special, and me pretty darn lucky to be in such phenomenal company.
So the next time you're in your studio making beads and you feel like it's a solitary pursuit, just think about all of the members of your tribe, all across the world, who are doing exactly the same thing at that moment, and remind yourself to be thankful for being part of such a supportive, exhilarating and dedicated community of individuals.
Blessings,
Angie Ramey, ISGB President

Lauscha Milky Way and Buckthorn
by Nicole Valentine Rimmer, Canada Regional Director
As all artists do, I am often drawn to certain color combinations. My personal taste tends to lean more towards neutrals and earth tones. Take Lauscha Milky Way, Buckthorn, turquoise, white and fine silver and I am in heaven. One of my favorite color palette it brings to mind warm fall evenings by the ocean with a light breeze and a hint of sea in the air.
You can find color palettes in your every day travels. I often stop at the paint sections in the hardware stores and pick up a couple of their interior design color chip books. These often have complimentary palettes with several colors in them. Pinterest in a fantastic place to search of great palettes. If you are looking for something specific use the search function. For this color combination I would have searched "sea blue color palette" or something similar to that, you will find more options than you will know what to do with! Search "Pantone palettes" for more interesting choices and some current fashion palettes.
Lauscha can sometimes be fussy to encase so when encasing any of it use Lauscha clear. If you want to be guaranteed of no problems keep Lauscha with Lauscha when doing any encasing, when adding stringer work or surface embellishments it's not so important.
Fine silver will give you many different reactions depending on which glass it's next to. Fine silver directly on the Milky Way can sometimes cause a bit of yellow haze if your flame is too reducing. Fine silver on the Buckthorn can give many different reactions depending on flame settings. Fine silver wire can get halo's around the dots when melted in and fine silver leaf can give a lot of blues and reactive crackling. Reducing flame will bring out a halo type reaction, high oxygen brings out the crisp silver creating quite a lovely contrast.

Experiment with layering the different colors, adding an opaque turquoise will bring a whole new set of reactions in depending on the turquoise chosen. Some will cause a reaction line in between the base color and itself and some will cause a haze effect.
These are two great colors to use with Heather Trimlett's 40-Bead Challenge because of the interesting and different reactions you can get out of them.

Here's a great way to support our organization and get your shopping done at the same time.
Amazon customers can select a 501c (3) organization to receive donations of .5% of the sale price of eligible purchases when shopping on AmazonSmile. ISGB is one of those organizations!
It's simple and there's no extra cost involved. You can shop for the same items, get the same prices, and experience the same Amazon services. This includes a vast selection of products and books, as well as digital (downloadable) media (Kindle, movies, etc.).
You will use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, Wish List, registry items, and other account settings are also the same. You can still buy items that are not eligible for AmazonSmile through the AmazonSmile site. When items are eligible it will say "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation" under the shipping information, but please note that recurring Subscribe-and-Save purchases and subscription renewals are not currently eligible.
AmazonSmile is just a different shopping site than Amazon. Always start at the AmazonSmile site so your purchases will be eligible for the donation. If you are a frequent shopper, you can even install the AmazonSmile 1Button which will automatically take you to the site with just one click, or simply bookmark the site.
How do you select our organization to support when shopping? On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations. Type in ISGB or International Society of Glass Beadmakers and you are ready to shop. AmazonSmile will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.
Support and donate to ISGB throughout the year. The holidays are right around the corner, so it's the perfect time to start! Remember ISGB only benefits when you shop at smile.amazon.com
