Best of the City
Covington Ranks Again in the 2012 "Best Of" Edition!
(Excerpted below)
"The 2012 list is out!
Every year we search out the best the city has to offer. This year, that means: Hot chocolate. Hip baby booties. Heavenly guacamole. Princess paraphernalia. Spare appliance parts. A top-shelf rye Manhattan. A top-notch brewery taproom. Believe us, there's something for everyone."
Rye Manhattan
Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar What is it about a rye Manhattan at the Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar that makes fans of this classic cocktail swoon? We can think of several things: the bourbon-infused sour cherry sitting like a prize at the bottom of the glass; the top-of-the-line ingredients beginning with Bulleit rye whiskey; and the collective expertise of the bar crew. Shaken or stirred, you'll want to hold on to your spot at the copper-topped bar for a second round.629A Main St., Covington, (859) 581-1777, Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar on Facebook
Picnic Spot
Devou Park Overlook Minutes from Interstate 75 and downtown Cincinnati, Covington's Devou Park overlook, adjacent to the Drees Pavilion, has what might be the tri-state's best view of the Cincinnati skyline and the Ohio River, and it's located in a free, public park. Lots of parking and plenty of grass to spread out on a blanket make it the perfect spot to steal away for a quiet lunch or a relaxed evening. The Pavilion is a popular wedding spot, so make way for bridesmaids. *790 Park Lane, Covington, (859) 292-2151, covingtonky.gov/index.asp?page=parks_new_devou_park*
Princess/Fairy Gear Stoney's Gifts Sandi "Stoney" Stonebraker has packed Stoney's Gifts, her tiny purple shop in Covington, with a thoughtful selection of fairy and princess goodies. There are plenty of silk slippers, tiaras, tutus, and tea sets, but she makes sure she stocks lots of other toys to spark a kid's imagination. We like the Rapunzel wooden story boxes by Steve Light, Pumpkin Theatre by Le Toy Van, fairy light kits, and terrific Hero Capes for girls and boys. Stoney's garden is available for birthday, tea, or dress-up parties. "I like to carry toys that are creative, educational, enhance self-esteem, and preserve the innocence of childhood," says Stonebraker. 323 W. Sixth St., Covington, (859) 655-9571, stoneysgifts.com
School Supplies John R. Green Store Parents, meet John R. Green. Many of the supplies this Covington educational superstore are of the classroom-equipping variety, but there's no reason you can't stock up on math flash cards from Trend Enterprises, science workbooks from Classroom Complete Press, or wall maps from House of Doolittle. You'll also find binders, pencils, stickers, toys, games, and activity kits from the likes of Crayola and Scholastic. Who needs recess?411 W. Sixth St., Covington, (800) 354-9737, johnrgreenco.com

Swing This Kettlebells
4300 Boron Drive Covington (Latonia), KY 41015
www.swingthiskettlebells.comSwing This Kettlebells and Functional Fitness announces their second expansion in just over 3 years and are celebrating with a Grand Opening at their New Location on Saturday, December 8.
Founded in 2009, Swing This Kettlebell and Functional Fitness was the idea of Joe Daniels of Daniels Fitness Training LLC to bring fitness to a broader range of exercisers in the area. No one sticks to an exercise program unless it's fun to do and they can feel and see the benefits. After 5 years of competitive bodybuilding training with clients, a more functional tool was beginning to be utilized more in the United States.
Welcome to the Kettlebell. Using kettlebells, ropes and sandbags, instead of the traditional gym machines and barbells, one is able to achieve much more fluent movement patterns that can assist in day to day life. One is no longer tied down to the floor and lacking real functional movement.
Swing This Kettlebell started out on their own in an 800 sq.ft. room when Joe Daniels moved from training clients in larger gyms around the area. Many people doubted that it would work as not many in the area knew (and still do not) what a kettlebell is. That was the old Katie Woodring Photography space in Latonia. Starting off only teaching a few people at a time in that space, Joe Daniels was voted Best Personal Trainer 2010 by Citybeat. In 2012, Joe Daniels was voted Best Personal Trainer by NKY Magazine. By now steadily growing interest in kettlebells and other functional training tools was being spread by avid gym-goers looking for something different. In November of this year, Swing This Kettlebells hosted the male and female World Champion Kettlebell lifters from Russia for a Seminar. Facebook and other social media presence have always been strong for Swing This, but this event brought a lot more exposure - bringing people to Covington from as far away as South Carolina and Florida. (info cont'd) Click here for more information or email Swing This by clicking here.

St. Vincent DePaul will be placing barrels in each of the Covington Firehouses again this year. Times are tough for many of our citizens young and old and this is a small way to give a helping hand. One coat can make all the difference to a person doing without this year. If you are cleaning out your closets and have a coat you are no longer going to wear, please put it in the barrel so someone can stay warm this year.

You can help make a Christmas Wish come true for St. Augustine School
St. Augustine School, located in the urban core of Covington, inspires its students to acknowledge their potential, awaken life's passion and embrace the knowledge that will lead to opportunities for a better life. Students rely on the school to provide a strong educational program so that they may learn and explore the world beyond the school's walls and its community. The students are eager to learn what the world offers; however, St. Augustine struggles to provide the needed tools. Technology is an avenue to reach beyond those walls. However, the advancement of technology keeps growing just beyond the school's reach.
St. Augustine School would like to upgrade its technology infrastructure by providing wireless access throughout the building in the hopes of beginning a one-to-one initiative for its middle school students. The Clorox Company's "Power A Bright Future" grant program can help make this happen. After a competitive national nomination period, now it is time for the community to show its support. Help St. Augustine School win up to $50,000 by casting votes starting November 12, 2012 through December 19, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Adults and children 13 and older can visit www.PowerABrightFuture.com to vote once a day. Neighbors, friends and family can also vote for their favorite school right from their phones via text message (message and data rates may apply).
The program that receives the highest number of votes will be awarded the $50,000 grand-prize grant, and the next top vote-getters in the Play, Create and Explore categories respectively will each be awarded a $25,000 grant. The Clorox judging panel will select three additional lucky schools, one in each category, to win a$25,000 judge's choice grant.
St. Augustine School can be one of only seven schools nationwide to win a grant, and you can help push the school to the top. Please share information about the competition with your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers and encourage them to vote for St. Augustine School. Your vote can make a difference in the lives of our students.
For details and official rules visit www.PowerABrightFuture.com or for information on St. Augustine School contact Principal Notre Dame Sister Maria Therese Schappert, smtherese@staugustines.net.
The link to vote is www.powerabrightfuture.com. You can search Covington as the location and St. Augustine comes up.

Gateway's New Instructional Design Certificates Offered in Downtown Location
Gateway Community and Technical College will offer three certificates as part of a new Instructional Design and Learning Technologies (IDL) program being developed in partnership with Covington's TiER1 Performance Solutions. The courses will be taught in the former TiER1 space in the Grand, formerly known as the Odd Fellows Hall.
Registration for the new certificates and Gateway's Spring 2013 semester, which begins Jan. 14, is under way. The certificates include Foundations of Instructional Design, Instructional Facilitation and eLearning Developer. The IDL certificates are the first new credentials to be offered in downtown Covington since the college's Nov. 14 announcement of its Urban Campus master plan.
When fully implemented, the IDL program will be the first of its kind at the associate degree level in the nation, according to Josh Heinrich, program coordinator.
"Instructional design focuses on systems, methods and technologies used to deliver information and instruction," Heinrich said. "This is a growing field that offers high-skill, high-demand and high-wage jobs related to the information technology industry."
An instructional designer designs and develops learning experiences that integrate skills in writing, web design, graphics, collaboration, and planning with the knowledge of how people learn. "Employers are seeking people who can develop instructional materials and products, assist in technology-based course design, coordinate educational content and incorporate current technologies into learning systems for the 21st century," Heinrich said.
Job opportunities related to instructional design include distance learning coordinator, instructional coordinator, multimedia artist/animator, and training and development specialists.
"The U.S. Department of Labor estimates a 22 percent increase in demand for these jobs in Kentucky by 2018, to more than 2,500 jobs," Heinrich said. "Kentucky's median annual wage for such jobs ranges from $45,000 to $63,000 a year. As an instructional designer, a new graduate can expect to earn $30,000 to $35,000 a year directly out of Gateway's IDL program."
The new Gateway IDL certificates are industry-recognized and "were created with industry experts to ensure that student classroom experiences mirror what he or she will be doing in the field," Heinrich added.
By law, Gateway credits can be transferred to any public four-year university in Kentucky. "This means our associate-degree program, when fully launched, will dovetail perfectly with bachelor's degree programs offered by four-year universities, such as those at Northern Kentucky University's College of Informatics."
Gateway is currently enrolling students in the new IDL certificate classes. For information about the IDL program, contact Josh Heinrich at 859-815-7794 or email GW-IDL@kctcs.edu. For general enrollment information, call 859-441-4500 and select the Admissions option. To apply online to become a Gateway student, click here.
Find Out How to Start College in January at Gateway Info Session Dec. 14
Need a better job? Ready for a fresh start? Tired of not having the right skills? Higher education is the solution, and Gateway Community and Technical College is the place.
Gateway currently is accepting students for the spring semester that begins Jan. 14, and the college is conducting information sessions Dec. 14 at its Edgewood Campus at 790 Thomas More Parkway. Sessions begin at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Gateway has the most affordable tuition in the region, and financial aid and scholarships are available. Financial aid workshops will be available throughout the day Dec. 14 to help prospective students learn how to apply for financial assistance. Gateway also offers free tuition to qualifying low-income students interested in allied health careers other than nursing.
"Dec. 14 is a full-service event," said Andre Washington, dean of enrollment management. "The information sessions provide all the details about how to apply and enroll. The financial aid workshops will address any concerns about cost, and we also have COMPASS tests scheduled at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Prospective students can get everything done in one day to be admitted."
The COMPASS test is a placement exam for students who don't have ACT or other placement scores. "The test simply tells us which classes students are ready for; advance preparation isn't necessary," Washington said.
According to a recently released report on the job outlook for 2020 in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region, 90 percent of the jobs paying above $33,130 a year will require some combination of post-secondary education, on-the-job training, and/or more than a year's work experience.
The report, produced in collaboration by Vision 2015 and Agenda 360, shows that healthcare, education, business, finance and technology are the top five fastest-growing and best-paying fields for the future, with production occupations in the sixth spot.
Gateway offers career and transfer education in all of the fastest-growing career fields.
"We encourage anyone who is interested in a better job, or starting a college degree, to call us and plan to attend the Dec. 14 event," Washington said.
For more information, call 859-441-4500 or 855-3GO-GCTC and select the Admissions option. Or visit the Gateway website, www.gateway.kctcs.edu/admissions

OKI WANTS TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK
The OKI Regional Council of Governments is updating a strategic policy plan in southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and southeast Indiana, and they want to hear from you about your opinions. OKI's original policy plan aimed to improve quality of life and service to the public in the region. Much has changed since the plan was adopted in 2005. With this update, OKI is re-visiting some strategic issues and considering others for the first time, and is inviting public feedback through a brief questionnaire that takes about 5 minutes to complete. The questionnaire can be found at www.howdowegrow.org and will be available until the end of the year.
