The Mayor's Challenge
Mayor Chuck Scheper has issued a challenge to the students of Covington. He has set a bold goal of 80% or 3360 of the 4200 Covington students, public and parochial, ages 5 to 18, will complete a Service Learning Project during the 2012-2013 school year Mr. Scheper is the first mayor in the Greater Cincinnati region to issue such a challenge to the students of his city. Beginning in November and each month thereafter through May, the Mayor and the Covington City Commissioners will honor those students whose Service Learning Projects were chosen by an independent group of Covington citizens for their creativity and impact on the local, regional and international community.
Mr. Scheper is issuing this challenge because:
1) he wishes to honor the many thoughtful students in Covington who make a difference in their community and their world
2) he wants the many good things done by these students to be more widely known
3) he believes that sharing the students' stories will encourage other students to share their talents
Mr. Scheper knows that a large number of energized and committed citizens is the key to a vital city. Engaging students energizes a city now and later.

Gateway Announces Master Plan, Moves Ahead with $80 Million Urban Campus in Covington
Gateway Community and Technical College has just released the details of the Master Plan for its Urban Campus in downtown Covington. The plan, estimated to cost $80 million over the next decade, features the adaptive re-use of nine existing properties, along with new construction, in an overall framework that will transform the region's urban core into a vibrant college community with opportunities for economic development as well as educational improvement.
Gateway President and CEO Ed Hughes said the college is in the process of acquiring the nine properties that will form the nucleus of the new campus, which will be created primarily in a six-block area from 4th to 7th Streets and from Greenup to Madison Avenue in Covington. Gateway will continue to occupy the building it acquired in 2010 at 525 Scott Blvd., the former Two Rivers school.
"Today's announcement has been 10 years in the making. It is the culmination of many hours of collaboration, negotiation, discussion, and visioning by dozens and dozens of community leaders, government officials, concerned citizens, Gateway's board of directors, faculty, staff and students, the Gateway Foundation board, and our planning consultants," Hughes said. "We were encouraged early by the community to think big.
"The Urban Campus not only will change the lives of the students who find new hope within its streets and walls, it will create as yet unimagined economic development potential for the river cities and the whole region," he added.
Hughes said the goal of the plan was to create a framework that would imbed the college into the community and enable even greater collaboration between the two. A key element of the plan is to work with existing community partners like the library, Northern Kentucky Convention Center, Baker Hunt Cultural Center and Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center. "Our plan complements what is in the community and doesn't duplicate what is here already."
"The increase in students, faculty and staff will boost the local economy with more jobs, retail and restaurants. It will invigorate Covington's Madison Avenue corridor and restore it to the vibrant district it once was," said Covington Mayor Chuck Scheper.
The Master Plan is viewable by clicking here.

Business & Economic Development Division
Naashom Marx is the City of Covington's new Business Development Manager.
She is not your typical Kentucky girl, or maybe she is? Growing up she was influenced heavily by religions, cultures and the space around her. Her adventurous ways first took her just across the US to the top of the Grand Teton and over to Regis University in Denver where she received a BA in Liberal Arts. At 28 she found herself standing in the densely populated country of Bangladesh not only dressed like a native but speaking Bangla as easily as English.
As a United States Peace Corps Volunteer, Naashom served in Bangladesh from 2003-2005. She is an alumnus of the University of Cincinnati where she was a Peace Corps Fellows and received a Master's in Community Planning which focused on economic development. Upon graduation she was hired by NGO's in Bangladesh and Uganda to bridge gaps between the non-profit and for-profit worlds. She focused on economic development that helped the underserved populations.
Over time Naashom missed home and moved back to Kentucky. She is coming to the City from the Northern Kentucky Area Development District where she was the Director for the Kentucky Innovation Network program. Her focus was to help entrepreneurs bring innovative business ideas into commercialization and create more knowledge based jobs in the rural communities.
As Business Development Manager, Naashom's role is to work with the community to recruit, recognize and retain businesses that make Covington a great place to live, work and play. You can contact her at 859.292.2168 or nmarx@covingtonky.gov.

Licking River Greenway & Trails Update:
Construction began the week of September 10th on Phase 1 of the paved levee trails as part of the Licking River Greenway. Trail work will stretch from Levassor Avenue to Clayton-Meyer Park on Thomas Street with a hopeful completion date of early November.
As a reminder this project was funded through the Department of Local Government (DLG) Recreational Trails Program Grant for $80,000, a grant from the Durr Foundation for $30,000, a generous donation from former City Commissioner Jerry Stricker for $20,000, and the remaining funds from Covington Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds dedicated to recreational improvements.
Construction will impact the playground at Clayton-Meyer Park and require its removal. The intent is to replace with new pieces once trail construction is finished. Once completed this multi-use, asphalt paved trail will link with our gravel nature path for nearly 2 miles worth of trails.
Please feel free to contact the Recreation Department if you have any questions related to the project.

The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly, are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races and creeds.
Nomination Information
2012 Rotary Club Heroism Award: Specialist Michael Lusardi
Specialist Lusardi is an 8-year veteran of the police department. He is a Graduate of Lexington Catholic High School and has a Bachelor's Degree from Western Kentucky University. Mike is married to Patrol Officer Sara Lusardi and they have one son, Levi.
Mike responded to an early morning house fire in the 1300 block of Wood Street. Upon realizing that he had preceded fire equipment, he acted swiftly to alert the occupants of the dwelling and move them to safety. Had it not been for Specialist Lusardi's swift action, the occupants of this dwelling could have been trapped, seriously injured or possibly killed.
We are grateful that Specialist Michael Lusardi was on patrol that morning and I can confidently speak for the family in saying that they are as well.

Holmes High School Marching Band celebrates season of new successes
(Excerpted from Cincinnati.com)
The Holmes High School Marching Band wrapped up its final performance for the year late last month, but the group is still celebrating a season full of new successes.
Growing from a group of 15 three years ago to 35 members this year, the high school's marching band program has undergone a transformation.
New members and a new director, coupled with a variety of new performance venues - including Florence Freedom and Cincinnati Cyclones games, Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon and the Kentucky Derby Festival's Pegasus Parade - have breathed new life into the program.
With good ratings at festivals and competitions throughout the season, and the band's first-ever appearance at the Kentucky Music Educators Association's State Marching Band Championship semi-finals last month, this season proved to be the band's best yet, according to Band Director Jared Murray.
"It's been exciting for our students," Maines said of the revitalization of the program. "The band is getting a lot of support from fellow students and school staff, and it has been great to be part of their journey, especially this season."
When the marching band headed out to compete late last month at the KMEA State Marching Band Championship semi-finals - having qualified for the first time in the school's history - the school community was ecstatic, Maines said.
"We had a big send-off for the kids," said Maines. "Everyone gathered together to cheer them on in true Bulldog fashion."

Holy Cross puts 5 students/players on Division I teams
National Signing Day
(Excerpted from nky.com)
Holy Cross is one of the smaller high schools in Northern Kentucky, with an enrollment of 431, but on November 14 it will have a robust group of seniors who will be able to sign National Letters of Intent to play in college.
Nov. 14 will be the first day high school athletes in the Class of 2013 can sign National Letters of Intent for basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving, lacrosse, volleyball, gymnastics, softball, golf, hockey, baseball and tennis.
The early period concludes Nov. 21 and the regular period starts April 17.
National Signing Day for football, field hockey, soccer, track and field, men's water polo and cross country is Feb. 6.
Holy Cross will hold an official signing ceremony in the school gymnasium Friday at 10:30 a.m. and it will have five athletes in four sports signing National Letters of Intent, all for Division I schools:
* Basketball player Antonio Campbell to Ohio University. Campbell helped lead Holy Cross to the All 'A' Classic state championship and was selected a first-team Enquirer All-Star after averaging 17.2 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots per game.
* Baseball players Blake Tiberi to the University of Louisville and Connor Callery to Ohio University. Tiberi, a third baseman/pitcher, led Northern Kentucky hitters with a .559 average, belted one homer, and had 12 doubles, 34 RBI and 33 runs scored. As a pitcher he compiled a 4-2 record with a 2.47 ERA and pitched a no-hitter.
* Softball player Madyson Moran to James Madison University. She is also a standout soccer player.
* Maddie Staubitz for rowing/crew at the University of Louisville.
"I think it reinforces our belief that we are a school that defies all odds," said Holy Cross athletic director Anne Julian, whose daughter Jayden is a freshman volleyball player at Northern Kentucky University and was one of seven members of the school's Class of 2012 who are playing sports in college.

"Through talent, hard work and a belief that it doesn't matter the size of the school as much as what you're willing to sacrifice is what gets where you want to go. It's a testament to our kids that they find a way to achieve their goals."
Among other Northern Kentucky seniors who are signing Letters of Intent today or in the next few days are: ...... (article cont'd)

Gateway Launches New KCTCS Student Service Center
Gateway Community and Technical is launching the first phase of a new service center that will respond to student questions seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The toll-free number is 855-3GO-GCTC or 855-346-4282.
"The service center will provide 'anytime, anywhere' access for our students," said Ingrid Washington, vice president of student development and Gateway's service center implementation leader. "This means students will have access to information outside of the college's normal business hours, as well as the opportunity for live chat and online services through a help desk at www.help.gateway.kctcs.edu."
Washington said the service center not only will improve access for students, it should enable increased efficiency for student services staff.
The Kentucky Community and Technical College System began implementing a service center model in July when three of the system's 16 colleges launched a similar effort. Gateway is one of seven additional KCTCS colleges launching the service this month. The remaining colleges are scheduled to launch the model early next year.
Gateway will maintain two main numbers until a second phase of the service center rolls out in a few months. People may call either 855-3GO-GCTC or 859-441-4500 to contact Gateway.
"We're excited about the potential the center offers us to improve our student services," Washington said. "People interested in Gateway just need to remember 855-3GO-GCTC. We'll take it from there."
Gateway Enrolling Students for January Semester
Gateway Community and Technical College is still enrolling students for the spring semester that begins Jan. 14, 2013.
"There are a lot of excellent reasons to enroll at Gateway," Washington added. "No. 1, an associate's degree can add an average of $16,000 a year to an individual's earning power. No. 2, Gateway tuition for a full-time, in-state student is $4,200 a year, well below the tuition of most other colleges in the region. No. 3, we offer 32 kinds of scholarships, as well as assistance in applying for other forms of financial aid."
Gateway also offers a special outreach program for military veterans and a host of services designed to help students overcome academic and non-academic barriers and stay in school to complete a credential.
"Gateway is a public, state-assisted two-year college," Washington pointed out. "Our goal is student success and completion. We want our students to feel welcome and to understand that we're dedicated to helping them succeed."
Credits earned at Gateway transfer by law to any of Kentucky's eight public universities. The college is regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. Credit earned at regionally accredited colleges like Gateway is generally accepted by four-year universities across the country.
Gateway offers more than 30 credential programs, including credentials in the top six fastest-growing, best-paying fields in the region. Classes are accessible at the college's campuses in Covington, Edgewood, and Florence, as well as online and through the Gateway Regional Academy or the Workforce Solutions Division. The GRA provides college classes to high school students, while Workforce Solutions works with employers to provide customized skill training.
Visit the website at http://www.gateway.kctcs.edu/Admissions or call Gateway at 1-859-441-4500.
Gateway Launches New Human Services Credential
Gateway Community and Technical College is launching a new credential program that offers an associate in applied science degree in human services. Registration for the new program and the Spring 2013 semester is currently under way.
Human service workers serve in a wide variety of private and public community agencies and help improve clients' lives. Jobs in the human services field include case workers and managers, counselors of various types, mental health aides, human services assistants, independent living counselors and many more.
Gateway's Human Services program prepares students for entry-level positions in agencies and institutions that provide social, community, educational and mental health services. In addition to classroom instruction, students learn to apply theory to practice in a clinical experience in a real-world setting.
By law, Gateway credits can be transferred to any public four-year university in Kentucky. After earning an associate degree at Gateway, Human Services majors can pursue bachelor's degree in counseling, Human Services, or related areas at a four-year university.
The human services field represents one of the 25 fastest-growing professions in the United States. According to the local 2020 Jobs Outlook Report, the number of jobs in the community and social services field is expected to increase by 36.7 percent by 2020 and total nearly 17,000 jobs. The local median wage in 2010 for such jobs was $37,630 a year.
Settings that employ human services professionals may include hospitals, youth care facilities, mental health settings, chemical dependency settings, correctional facilities, geriatric settings, and social services agencies.
Gateway's program qualifies for student assistance under a federal Health Profession Opportunity Grant. As a result, low-income students interested in human services may qualify for special tuition assistance and other financial benefits. Contact GW-HPOGemail@kctcs.edu for more information.
Classes for the 2013 spring semester begin Jan. 14, and registration for new or returning students in any field is ongoing. For information, call 859-441-4500 and select the Admissions option. To apply online to become a Gateway student, visit http://www.gateway.kctcs.edu/Admissions/How_to_Apply.aspx.
Gateway Has a Scholarship for You: Apply Now
Do you want to go to college but think you cannot afford it? Try going on a scholarship. Gateway Community and Technical College offers 32 different categories of scholarships. The time to apply starts now.
"Students often don't apply because they think their grade point average has to be 4.0 to receive a scholarship. That isn't the case," said Will Bradley, Gateway coordinator of financial aid and scholarships. "Eligibility requirements vary by category, and being a straight-A student is not necessarily required. We have scholarships available for single parents, minority students, and students with a 2.0 average who show academic promise.
Bradley said Gateway has general scholarships available for students in any field, but some are dedicated to specific disciplines, such as advanced manufacturing, electrical technology, computer-assisted drafting and design, education, nursing and allied health.
In addition, Gateway has tuition-assistance funds available from a federal grant specifically for low-income students interested in certain allied health careers.
"The key is to apply," Bradley added. Here's how:
1. Complete a scholarship application at www.gateway.kctcs.edu - Click Financial Aid; then Scholarships.
2. Explain why you believe you should receive a scholarship. Indicate your educational and career plans. Please include your personal situation - children/family, financial income, work situation, etc. Bradley said including the personal situation is optional, but it provides the scholarship review committee with a complete understanding of your situation.
3. You can apply for more than one scholarship, but review each scholarship carefully because some require separate applications and written statements.
4. Provide two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.
5. Provide the scholarship application, your explanatory statement, letters of recommendation (and other requirements for those scholarships requesting extra steps) to the Gateway Financial Aid Office no later than April 1, 2013 (postmarked by April 1, 2013 will be accepted).
For more information, contact Will Bradley at William.bradley@kctcs.edu or call 859-441-4500 and select the financial aid option.

Since the AIA program's initiation in 1983, the organization has bestowed awards to more than 80 artists. Distinguished AIA alumni include ceramics artist Terri Kern, printmaker Mary Mark, abstract painter Frank Herrmann, photographers Mary Strubbe and Brad Austin Smith and printmaker Thom Shaw.
About Robert Fry - Covington, Kentucky
Robert Fry specializes in sculpture using wood as his primary medium. For thirty years, Fry has labored to created distinctive and quietly elegant sculptures that convey a subtle balance between contrasting forms. His pieces contain elements that add contrast and complexity through his use of texture, color and line. Fry uses recycled objects and wood salvaged from storm damage or diseased trees, which prevents the materials from ending up in a landfill. In the near future, he would like to create larger, more complex sculptures and bring them to life in a new direction with elements including sound and lighting. He plans to use the award to help him create a large scaled sculpture in the atrium of the Weston Art Gallery for his upcoming exhibition in 2013. The sculpture will be made of about 90 hand-carved wooden dowels, supported by a metal grid 12 feet in the air. Fry would also like to use the award to help him set up a website to showcase his works to a wider audience.
Summerfair Cincinnati has been supporting and promoting artists and the arts year-round in the Greater Cincinnati area for more than 40 years. Over the past 20 years, the organization has contributed more than half a million dollars in the form of awards and scholarships, and additional support to events and exhibitions.
